SUBSCRIPTION ONE DOLLAR PER YEAH ^:= i a, H, WOODWARD; Editor . THRUSDAY, AUG 18, 1910. Columbia's base ball team, as usi al with it in the last two or three seasons, is holding down the tale end r\t 4l?n A tliintip. T.nntrnp with a persistency of determination to stay there worthy of a better cause Even the water tank at the depot became ashamed of longer standing sentinel o\er the poor apology for a passenger station at Conway, and fell to pieces one day|recently with a crash that could be heard uearly all over town as if to add emphasis to its protest. The national government annually appropriates large sums for the improvement of the rivers and harbors of the nation and annually pays * * A\ ^ fl J1 large sums do me various rauroaus for transporting the mails. Both of these measures are meritorious and consequently deserving of all, and even more, they get from the government and no reasonable person objects to them because they are ?recognized essentials to commercialism and the improvement of our waterways so as to supply transportation facilities for moving the raw and manufactured farm commodities to and from market But, then, there is another matter in which the government is as vitally interested as it is in improved inland waterways because they are used daily by the government and toward the maintenance of which it contributes not a single penny. The public roads of the country deserve and demand aid ' from the national government because they are used by it as post, as well as when occasions arise a.1 '' military roaas, consequently it should bo willing to bear its share of the expense of putting aud keep f ing them in good repair. If it is righl, and this right is conceded. for the Jgovernmeut to appropriate millions and millions for river anc 1 harbor improvement, and millious ( more to railroads for carrying the mails, then it follows as a logical sequence that it should be willing to bear at least a share of the expense of building and keeping the public roads in good repair. This v matter is respectfully called to the attention of our representative in the hope that he can see his waj clear to lay this' proposition before Congress. I Struck a Rich Mine. While a woman with nine children would be justified in having an tccasional fit of the blues, she hasn't the time to indulge.
