A KICK PROM NEAR NORTON. A Correspondent from Old Stand Skakft (be Bljr Stick* Editor Herald: Will you give uie space for a few liues iu our good old Herald? Some crops are looking very well and some are sorry for this time of the year. I would like to know where our road supervisor is these days, He has b een In oflice now for some time and he has not been over our road which leads from the Conwaj' road < leading to Spring Branch church and some places on the road in ' ^ c 4/>nt?nlilrvioon nn l*r A fir li r-1 f vxreeu octt iiimusuipioou uu> >v? uuuu two can't pass one another. We are just as much in ueed of good roads as are the people of any other section of the county, and I think our Supervisor should pay us an official visit at least once a year and look over all the roads. He is paid by the taxpayers of the county to do this and he should, as a part of the duties of his office, inspect these roads and instruct the overseer as how to proceed to put the ro^ds in good repair and keep them 30. Second, I wish we had a law in South Carolina prohibiting a person under tweuty-oue years of age to purchase a cartridge, and fixing the penalty for its violation one year on the gang. And when a man purchases cartridges com pell him to make oath that he will shoot thein in a rifle or shot gun, and for a viola lion of this oath he be sentenced to two years on the gang. The mania for carry pistols is becoming to be fierce, and it is more noticeable in young men and boys down to and even below twelve years of age. Obituary Notice. Brother Wade Hampton Calhoun was born September 11, 1870 and died May 13, 1910, He is survived by his wife and seven children?the eldest a youth j of fifteen years, aud a little girl about two years old ?his parents, Rev and Mrs D A Calhoun, of the South Carolina Conference, and four brothers. Brother Calhoun was married October 11, 1893 to Miss Willie Ann Johnson, of the Jordanville section of Horrv county, whore he has since lived uutil his death. He joined the Methodist Church in his early boyhood days and made a profession of Christ in his early manhood. He was a faithful member of the Church, a true Christian gentleman of a high order. He was quiet, modestj and unassuming in his bearings at all times and under all conditions. Ho was loved, re - ? * ' - ? ^ i- ? . . ^ i rl Uln VI A? The examples, influence and Godly counsels of his noble parents were not lost on him, but bore rich fruit in his life. Brother Calhoun said to his noble wife sometime before his death, that it grieved him to know that he must soon leave her and the children, yet he knew all was well with him and that he would be much better ofT by the change. The writer visited him several times during his illness and always found him patient and resigned to the blessed Father's will. , He was ever faithful as a member of the Church. He was a Steward '? in Antioch church at his death and had been Superintendent in the Sunday school before his health declined. Our Brother seemed strong and in good health until about seven months bafore his death. At this time a terrible and incurable malady seized on his strong body and there was nothing but suffering and death left for him. and he knew it, but he was ready. * May God's richest blessings rest upon the bereaved widow and orphaned children, and the other loved ones, and may they all so live as to moot the dear 0110 in that bright and blessed world, where there will be no moie sickness, sorrow or death, His Pastor A Woman'* (ireat Idea is how to make herself attractive But without health it is hard for her to be lovely in face, form or temper. Utilization of Wood Keslns. I More or less has been done already in obtaining new and valuable products from pitch, and also from the 'lightwood" which remains after the pine tree has been gradually killed by continuous tapping. In the number of products extracted from the pitch or from the wood itself these may become a source as prolific as coal tar in useful products extracted from them. Camphor has advanced enormously in price in the last twenty years, and tne price is still rising. There has been no increase in itie supply as against enormous increase in the demand. The first great rise was ^ 4 Krv i\\tifA/d ion /*\ f noil nlrtwl U m< tu IUU pel V/l 1/V/I1 UIV/IV" , A. factor that has still farther and in au even greater degree increased the demand has been the use of camphor in the various kinds of smokeless powder. In the latter instance camphor is the only satisfactory solvent so far found for cellulose. It is entirely within the possibilities that a substance may be developed from the sources just indicated that will take the place o camphor for this purpose. It is another case of rubber substitutes; the product need have but this one quality of camphor in otdor to make it of tremendous value. This is an extremely interesting field for the inventor, holding great possibilities. H "My husband begged me ||i SB to take Cardui," writes Mat- Eg H tie L.
