VOL XXIV. Al IJWESS Southern Wood and Product Co., Organized. will employIoo hands. The Walker Chemical Works has Been MorirecJ Into the Ntw Enterprise and the Capltul Stock lu ? A..? einn noil -I <tr<ro Kl KilBt'U IU UTKI -i* a ?/<> ? _ ~ Quantities of Lljrtitwooci Pur* cbased. Walker Chemical Co , which has been at Conway for several years past in the production of spirits of turpentine and resinous oil used in commerce, was re-orty:anized and chartered under the laws of the State of New York under the new name of Southern Wood Product Co., and with a capital stock of more than one hundred thousand dollars. The new company has taken over the plant, consisting of valuable machinery and various equipments, and it will still be operated at is present site and will produce LOO SHII1B pruuuui? UM uw <?, The Southern Wood and Products has been organized to produced spirits of turpentioe and rosin under a comparatively new process. Tho products of the present plant are made from ligbtwood which the company purchased on large tracts from land owners in different sections of the county, and tho same kind of raw meterial will be used by the new company in the prrduction of spirits and rosin. For tho purpose of having an adequate supply of ligbtwood the new company has recently acquired from Burroughs & Collins Company, lightwood timber on eleven thousand acres of land, located near the western terminus of tho Conway, Coast and Western railroad. A new plant has become necessary and this wdl be erected near the river about 150 feet from the old plant. It will be located on the same property and very near to the line of the railroad. The capacity of this new plant when completed will be seventy barrels of rosin per day and 225 gallons of spirits. The capacity of the old plant v*ill remain tho same: The capacity of the new plant will no doubt be considerably increased after its operation has been commenced, Tho new concern will have a pay roll on which there will be more than a 100 names and all of this labor will be employed locally None of the laborers will be brought from other States. There will be two forces?one employed at the factory and the other in the woods whore the lightwood will be handled for shipping to the plant. Years ago Conway took the lead among towns in South Carolina in the proouction of naval stores from growing trees. For some years past tho pine trees have been gradually used up and the making of these products has steadily decreased so that its reputation has been lost to some extent in that line With a factory producing such a large quantity of spirits and rosin daily, Conway will be brought again to the head of the bat. The stockholders in the new company are virtully the same as the * stockholders of Walker Chemical Works The people of Conway are perhaps personally acquainted with onlytwoof them ?Mr George Walk or, who has visited Conway frequently in the past on business pertaining to the company and Mr L D Magrath, the manager of the business The erection of an extensive plant and the making of spirits and ro?in from dead wood on alart'e scale has been made possible by a discovery or invention of Mr Walker's. The rosin will be produced from lightwood bv means of a solvent, the process for which was in- 1 vented and patented by Mr Walker. The old plant is run on ados' Mmtive process while the new will ?, ate by means of an extraction process. The purpose of this enterprise is to make from timber which has been dead for years, some products which before were only made from live - Some vears ai/o the irreat P sJ n t, quautityof lightwood and lightwood timber scattered over large areas in Horry county was not considered as being of any commercial value, but by reason of discoveries and inventions of later years this lightwood has become very valuable, and the products made from it seem to be better and more in demand than those which were formerly produced from live trees. The site for the new plant has been cleared and is in readiness for the work, and the new machinery and mate'iaKs have been purchased from the factories and are now on their way to Conway. It will be in operation about the 1st of October. A dock 250 feet in length will be erected on the shore of the river for the purpose of accommodating the large shipments that will be made almost every day from this factory, The steamers of the Wacoamaw will be loaded at this dock and the County Democratic Convention. The County Convention was helJ here last Mood \y at the court house j and the following delegates we re I eiected to represent th j County at the State Convention: D A Spivey, L B Singleton, W L Dryan, J N Jen ret to, VV E McCord, W L Mishoe. Relative, ? o Obituary, Cullie Pridgon, the second son of Rev W. D. Pridgon and wife, departed this life on the 24th of April, 1910. He was in bis fourteenth year and was sick ouly a few days. The physician attending f) r s t thought that he had appendicitis, later that his trouble was gastritis. His disease was severe, but he was patient and complained very little in the presence of his people. He told his grandmother that he had never done anything bad. His language was good and pure, and he was clever, kind and well disposed and dutiful and obedient to his parents. During his sickness h.; said that something came and told him that he would soon be well. He seemed ; to interpret that message as a pre- : monition that he would soon be where sickness could not come < He trusted in the atonement of i Jesus and went to bo with Him in Paradise His desire was to sing i and praise the Lord in his last hours and a stnile greeted those who came I to his bed.-ide. 1 mUy. f.innnnl tnrvinoo OTrtVA "? f \ ?"t _ ( I 11 n lUIJ^I U1 oi; t v & wo ???.? v v/ ' ducted bv the writer ?n the home, in the presence of manv friends and < sori owing loved ones He was laid . to rest in^the Powell ceinterv and j the newly made grave was almost j covered with flowers.
