Editor Herald:?As I thiiiK cdu cation and perioral imprnverm n' ol the school buildings, grounds, etc , are one, or should be one ninor^ L1 e most imp >rtant subjects for wi teachers who have ixporience alonu" that lino of work for the pa?>t i-ev eral years to write?then foe in ra\ feeble way wiil try and jjive a few &catleriu? thoughts. Dear teacher, are we trying to encourage our beloved natrons and trustees to improve their : c .< ols us we should, so as td give more inducement to the pupils to seek f< 1 u) education? hn't it the sehoo. hou*e with its surrounding ground that the foundation of Am net's lu lure greatness is laid? If s\ w? should do more, dust ih nk of ti t children that are leaving homo Some of them ere leaving Imtno will eagerness to inter this m \v world Others in fear and rcmblirgof tin unknown dillicultics that be withii the school gate ate the matcviul if wh c't the teacher must make future citizens. During this p.ustie stat> f childhood impressions are easily made and ideas quickly formed eithi r for better or for worse. It is ensiei to favorably impress or other nisi the seeking mi nil of the child than it is to arouse the impression at let they have been made. Now, dear friends, if tlm above statement be true, i-u't it plainly the duty of the teacher, the bo are and parents of the various sehiTW^to influence the rising generation to higher ideals, higher standard o< honesty, higher desires for an c.lu cation, a higher love for beauty and of nature, so that ? vi rtually the ideal American citizen shall be lornted. But oh 1 1 fear it is to often the case that some progressive young teacher with a larger slock of i nergy and the desire to better the pupils is held hack by an unsympathatic board or parents, i think in many sections it would be well to start 1 ho planning of the improvement of the school grounds etc., by a systematic canvass of the community in order to arouse the public opinion of those who could bo induced to favot the betterment of the school in the way of improvement. Jn many localities tho educating of the public is as import ant as that of thechi'd and is attended by many more difficulties. Even then a great unnv times the teacher doe1 nr\l t 1 i l n 1/ t f U/?c t t o c 1 i ?? t 1 w\ r? i 5 . \ r\ nun I?IIIIM% 11/ utou IU Dili i in; nil fine* of the parents in the community so as to obtain the desired funds and cooperations. Fellow teachers shouldn't there exist a bono between all rural >chool teachers so that one might continue the well thought out plan of theother, and carry to success a project which should be desired by all alike? We all very well know many localities wd1 not believe n ih ir/ until they see if, and >1 lOiongu h hard w? rk of the instructor ti e f?->bidding and uner i gonial grounds surroui ding a district school ta i on a cbaiacun oi beauty and r ti ement, thfre will be tome neighbor or seme member of the beard sure to notice the <. hangn nnd willingly start a ounpagn in favor of tin "school beautiful." Thee is nojli ing that so appeals to ihe develop' ing mind as the beauties of nature ' Therefore it is the teacher's du!> to keep the child who starts for school with joy and gluuncos in that condition throughout their schc cl career, so mat tn y may carry int< 1 tie world the i einembrunc e of happy school days. Likewise, it is also incumbent upon tliC teacher tc so handle the child who c mes tc him or her with fear and drc ad that . .such feelirgs shall be lornoved and the pupil continue in tchool with I joy ami gladner s so that they mas {40 out into the vo id prepared tc \ fill his or her place to the best nd vantage of the country and community. There is nothing that wiij 1 add to the use of teaching, to the increase of learning and the joy I . living more than a uoniiy p^unec and beautiful scLor 1 gtounds surrounding a comfortable icho >1 house 1 Tnerefore we should encourage our primary and s e n clary schools. I But, ah, there are so many, w be do not think they are under obligations to Clod and the world to send 1 their children to school, Man> seem to think that they are free tc bring up their chiloren as tbe\ please no matter what becomes ol God's command. Even if there were no souls and we had not ihe least need of schools and the languages . for the scriptures and of God, this I one reason should fewftice to cause (U? , ..r .1 - 5 iijo csuiunn Jinuiib u 1 i iits V ( vy 00?1 schools everywhere, both for boy* and girls namely: The world needs accomplished men and women foi maintaining its outward temporal prosperity so that the men may be ; capable of properly governing tin j country and people, and the womcr - of superintending the home, chil dren, etc. Now, such men must come of boy , and such women must come of gills f Therefore the object must be right i ly to instruct and educate boys am girls for these purposes.
