. Tl VOL. XXII. PASTURE FOR HOGS. ( A Change of Feed Keeps Them Healthy and Thriving. Ilero, In the south, it Is yet true that our meat house is still very largely in the west, remarks the Southern Planter, Virginia. It is a reflection on our farmers that they will not take ' hold of tills question in the way they should and ought to do. Almost any of the pure bred hogs will make good foundation stock. A pure bred boar should l?e selected, and If pure bred bows can also be afforded they also should be Selected. The next point requiring attention Is the production of the crops necessary to grow the hogs at the least cost. They cannot be successfully or profitably grown on corn. Lots With Hog Proof Fences. To make n success a piece of land should he divided into live lota with hog proof fences separating thoni. The size of the lots should depend on the nmuher of kogs to lie raised, hut It la not advisable to make the lots too lar^e, as this Is apt to cause much of the crop to he wasted by the bogs wondering about In It and trending It down. It Is better to make duplicate lots where a large number of hogs are to be grazed and not make the single lots larger than two acres each. The first crop to plant should he cowpens or cowpens and sorghum. Put two or three of the lots in this cron. sow Ing i?t intervals of a week or. ten (lays, ko that they may follow each other In succession. Then plant other lots In soy bonus ami others In sorghum alone to make grain and cane for late feeding Sowing Rape and Turnips. As the first coWpca lots are grazed olT they should he followed by rape sawed In the end of July or beginning of August and later cow pea and sorghum lots be seeded with crimson clover, wheat, oats and rye mixed, or with vetches and wheat, oats and rye. These will give winter and saving grazing. In July one lot should be sown In turnips for winter feeding. A variety of grazing crops Is very essential to the success of thkj method of growing hogs, as change of diet keeps them healthy and thriving. The hog wanted Is one that will make 2.">0 10 3o0 pounds of meat In loss than one year from being farrowed and will do this largely on grazing crops and with the help of only u few bushels of com to harden the meat just before killing.
