VOL XXII. I5B Illicit Distillers Hold High Carnival Near Hammond >S0 IT IS REPORTED TO US. People arc ill Fear of a Lawlrss Ciamr of Dcsporadoea Tlircatltijr to Burn Property or Kill Those Wlio Inform Airalnst Tlicm. The Aiilhoritlcs Should Act' If reports, which keep coming into Conway are true, there is a serious condition of alTairs existing in the neighborhood of Hammond P () in this county. The Herald is informed by reliable people - whose word cannot be doubted, that certain persons are engaged in that neigh'?i. ' borhood in violating the liquor laws and making intoxicating liquor, which is not only illegal, but poisonous to those who use it. The still or stills wherejtbis stutT is prepared is located in the swamps, and it is said that it is made in large quantities and retailed to any one who desires to buy it in tho open day time, during tho week, and on the S ibbath day and in bold defiance of the law. This is bad enough, but to make matters worse, it is stated that the people are in fear of this e'ement and refuse to tako any steps whatever to have tho parties prosecuted. One man stated he would us soon chop oil his own head as to swear out a warrant. Some time ago a negro woman was wounded and no steps have been taken to apprehend the perpetrators. Criminals buy this moon-shine and iret drunk Saturday nights and Sunday, and it would bo impossible to protray in words the exact condition iu that neighborhood. It is stated further that men are afraid to collect debts, and rather than run the risk of bein?r shot or their property burned, simply let these outlaws have their own. way. Not more than six months a<jjo near by iu that same section a man's house was shot all to pieces and his wife received a wound, and although a prosecution was started it was mysteriously withdrawn in some way and no one was ever punished. The Herald calls this matter to the attention of the autnorities with the hope that slops will bo taken to put an end tc this condition of affairs.
