SUBSCRIPTION ONK DOLLAR PKlt Y KA H. H, WOODWARD, IMltor THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 1008. A good work for a civic league is the removal of the "old turntable on upper Mainistreet and turning its sit*4 into a beautiful little park with its roses, its carnations, its shurbs, its ovorirpnnne hnn<?hnc It c nocu oononwe v T v^i ^ i v.*. ii '\<??* ? ivp) t vo \ v.iM in;i r? and its restful comforts. How attractive would such a place he, art! what an advertisement would it he for our little city on the dark rolling waters of the beautiful |\Vaccamaw? Mr A L Lewis, a prominent farmer of the Lake Swamp section, and a member of the investigating' committee of the grand jury, gave the Herald a pleasant social call one day last week. Mr Lewis wasatonetime prominent in the political history of the county and it was while he was School Commissioner that the interest in theeducation of our hoys and girls lirst received its impetus and from that day till this educational interest of the county has been going upward and onward until now the beacon light of education sheds its refulgent beams into the highways and byways pointing the children of every home, no matte.r whether it is gilded with the luxuries of wealth or the poverty stricken homes of the poor to the fountain of knowledge, inviting them to come and drink. There h ns hfnn cn tniwil> D\? UIUVII UUVIIraent dono hereabouts recently by poachers and trespassers that owners of reality are becoming alarmed and are posting their lands in self protection. They have had stock grazing upon their own land shot down, game woutoaly destroyed and other depredations committed that forbearance has ceased to bd a virtue, and they are determined to put a stop to it by lawful means if possible. These men are law abiding citizens who love law and order and will exhaust every means within their reach to preserve the one and uphold the other. They are not contentious about this matter, nor have they any desire to deny those who want to fish, hunt, or pass through their lands any pleasuro, but they insist and demand that those who do so shall first obtain permission so that if they are damaged by such trespassing they will know who the guilty are who do these things and can hold them responsible. In this they are right. Tf people are so lost to a senco of decency as to destroy the property of another while unlawfully entering upon the lauds of their more frugal and energetic neighbor, who by their industry and thrift have succeeded in accumulating property and surrounding themselves and families with someof the comforts, if ijuo lUAiu ies oi me, they should bo made to sulTor in someway for their wrong doing. If a person through kindness and forbearance of his neighbor enters the land of another and willfully shoot down his stock commits other acts of depredations, through pure cussedness he should be made to suffer the extreme penalty of tho law. or be forced to leave the county for the county's good.
