WOOI>\VAKIr, ImTlor THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 1008. .COTTON FACTORY. , We call attention of Herald readers to the communication of Mr D R Royals, published olsewhero in this issue, in which he urges the people of Conway and Horry lo build a cotton factory and cotton seed oil mill at. Conway. The reasons tnvon bv Mr Rnvnla (rtv on?L notion on the part of the business yntcrests of town and county are cogent and to the point and full of wisdom and logic,* The conditions enumerated by him are known to exist right here to an alarming extent Conway and Horry young nion and young women are going from among us to seek employment elsewhere simply bocau&e they cannot find remunerative employment here. True work can be had by willing hands in tho field and forost and stream but in a majority of instances it is such a class of labor that holds out no inducements, no hope for a future rise except to one out of many and the majority may work all their lives and when the end comes it will find them nothing but hewers of wood and drawers of water. Let us do something to keep our young peoplo at home by giving them employment in which they will have an opportunity to rise in life and make a name for themselves. There is no ouestion ahnuf o I , V U VvU t" I ton factory and a cotton seed oil mill being town builders and trade drawers. The ovidencos are so numerous that it scarcely needs any argument to prove them such. The experience of the upper tier of counties in this State along those lines furnishos argument enough to provo to the most skeptical that they the> aro potent factors in the grand scheme of industrial development and contribute more largely perhaps than any other single agency to the upbuilding of a town and county as well as increases the volume of trade. This has been tho experience of those towns where a cotton factory is located. If we in Conway would learn lessons in wisdom and profit by the experience of others it bchoovs to follow their exexample. FOUR INUISANCFS. There are four very annoying nuisances in Conway that should bo abated at once. They have existed for sometime and are so obviou:? that they cannot help but come under the observation of the town marshal. The Herald has kept silent concerning them for a long time hoping against hope, it seems. '* '^11 a stop would bo put to them bv these whose duty it is to do so, but inasmuch as it has not teen done, the Herald feels it its duty to call public attention to them |in a kindly way in the belief that the evils complained of will be stopped. The first of these is the custom of some engineers on arriving in Conway to stop on the hill at the Methodist church and blow the whistle of the locomotive repeatedly. These unearthly, ear spliting, brain rack i?k uuu nerve Tioriuririg shrieks may be music to the engineer's ears, but they are far from so to a soiely afflicted community. The next one is blocking the cross streets by the trains for an unreasonable length of time. There is a State law prohibiting trains blockading a public road longer than five minutes at a time and a fine is imposed for its violation. Another of them is fighting dogs on the public streets of Conway. This is not only reprehensible in the extreme but is cruelty to animals and is indictable. The fourth is catching ball on the streets. This habit is really dangerous and puts in jeopardy the life and limb of the citizen. Several persons have been more or less injured by being hit by stray balls while passing. We trust a word to the wise will bo sufficient. M W Cook, who has been for several months at home on the sick list, has resumed his place behind the counters at the Horry Hardware Co. Mr Cook has certairily had a tough time and his numerous friends and customers are pleased to see him at his place of business again. We want to see its waste places built up and its business interests extended even beyond the borders of the county. We want to seo Horry spotted with fruitful and productive farms, orchards, vineyards and pastures. We want to see pretty dwelling houses surrounded by flowers and vines and evergreens, the laurel and magnolias. There is more Catarrh in this soction of the country than all other diseases put together, until the last few years was supposod to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease and proscribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced itincurablo.
