Ilealil? generally good at present. The fanners aro hustling with th ilr work. We are having a very good Sunday school at Bculah under the care of Rev D. I). Cox, as superintendent. Rev J. T. Caines has been visiting friends and relatives here recently and preached very good sermons at Beulah and Macedonia churches. Mr Caines now resides at Harpers, but is contemplating moving in this section. The stock law agitation seems to have receded. The question is not settled is it? Keep it up until we get a chance to vote on it again, as that is the only proper way to settle it for any length of time. I am in favor of the stock law, but, if after an election is had, and it is voted down by the people I will be satislied. But I believe the majority of the voters will stand in favor of it. 1 believe that if the expense of fencing was applied to the best method of raising feed, there would be sufficient feed to feed the stock of every Kind in this county. So vou see we would have as surplus the feed we now use. Some of the correspondents opposing the stock law seem to think it a sin to keep the A 1- t - ? ? C. Cause, an old confederate soldier, was preached by Rev T). D. Cox on last Sunday. lie preached a very able sermon to a large congregation. Ileulali Sunday school marched from the homo oiT James P. Cause to the cemetery with a few of old confederate 'soldiers present. Messrs W. 11. and Wpft Carter, two old confederate veterans made very interesting talks ift behalf of liro Cause, who we hope is gone to a better world than this. John VV. Carter, Sr. vkftftp OIIUGO? Observer'* Reply. 1 uxr.ln ask for space in your columns for a few lines in reply to Mr liaccoou, your correspondent from Lake Swamp, who attempted to say iu his last article that I was a gothamist, a dissembler, a cold professor and a drunkard. lie also tried to insinuate that I did not regard temperance in any way. T am indeed sorry that he lost control of his temper when ho read my article for while his reply is an open confession of his frensy, it is only measured by mo as words of kindness for which I must tender my sincere thanks to him. Now, if he will read carefully T will show him where he is as much a false accuser as I am. lie says I was unable to inform him satisfactorily in the inforinat ou he was seeking. This was true for ho was noi competent to tell what information ho wanted after ho had boon sohast> to ask for it. Ho v could I properl\ inform him when I did not know what informal >n he wanted and he could not tell iiu ? He said I exploded and tried o blow oil' my gas on him, but he is mistaken there for 1 am thankful 1 can blow without gas, and T assure him if I were to use any gas and it were to blow off I would be careful to try to blow itotT on something besides a frog that had been nothing all his life but gas. I will kindly thank him for ill he says to mo through the columns of the Herald, but I see ho Is not very thankful to me. lie says ho is not an infidel or a backslider. I don't say that ho is either of these, tint, if ho is n. f!hri?t ian be must be queer, beeauso be admits that be does not want belief, probably be don't want belief on tbo Son of Clod but just "lacks belief," further hosayshebas not renounced his principles, but whether lie has or not some of the traits of bis principles have been very frankly established among some of bis many friends. As to him being a Christian I hope be is, but that is not for me to say just now but I will let what I have said stand before the many readers of the Herald as a paradox. , Whether or not 1 am competent to till1 a clerk's place, when I wish to write an article to tbo Herald 1 am com-! petont to do my own writing and dictating and not have to invite and trouble my friend to come and help me. When 1 read bis article of ( course 1 was satisfied for 1 was real t glad to know that bo could speak so well of himself, but am sorry that be tried to wrongfully accuse me. I am sorry Mr Raccoon did not have a big gun as be says, and not have to strain his assiduity trying to shoot grape shot with such a small air gun. 1 do not practice anything contrary to temperance, neither by drinking nor violence, and if I did I would not deny it. Now ho is welcome, so far as I have anything to say, to write again. 1 am not writing this in a convulsion of my passion and J hopo be will read it with pleasure as I did what bo said, and assuring him that violence shall not overrule temperance and moderation on my side of any question, I am bis friend. Observer. Box. The health of the community is generally good at present. Farmers are about through planting and have had nice seasons for setting out tobacco. The hoppers have been very numerous, but some folks have resorted to paris green. This is campaign year and candidates are also very numerous. The last issue contained a short article calling attention of tl e readers to the importance of electing men for olTice that were worthy, competent, and sober minded, and 1 includo good habits. Dear readers wo should look upon these things with much importance. The writer has been informed that tax executions have been moro numerous with some folks than usual. Mr Jeremiah Mishoe was in our locality not many days ago, with what he supposed to be six hundred executions. He stated to one farmer that he found three fourths of them paid and that the parties had receipts to show that they had paid. This goes to show that there is some careless transactions some where, and where does it lie? I should think this would need careful consideration. When 1 keep my books straight there is no there is no cliauee for fnnli. n n/1 .... v wi utiiwiiu^, uuu nuuu uuuur 1 careful consideration should bo sufli cient to call the readers of the Herald and the voters of ?the county to -Sample [>ods is the skeleton in the she > nn nl/1 nrAA/io 4-?
