Hard to l'leaae. Some of the anti-dispensary papers that were busy during the last campaign spreading the unfounded and silly report that the dispensary was in a bankrupt condition are now frothing at the mouth because the dispensary has paid sixty-three thousand dollars into the school fund and wiped out its indebtedness tc the schools. This is a clear case of "dainm if you do" or "dam:n if you dont." We are glad that the dispensary has paid the school fund up in full. If people will drink whiskey, we know of no better purpose to put the money than to educate their children. Then attention was turned to the refuse of tho forests already UFed and experiments were made which demonstrated that the stumps of the pine trees, which had orlgnlally been passed over as not worth the troublo of digging out, were saturated with raw turpentine. These stumps Immediately took on a commercial value which will furnish small fortunes to tho men who own them. In some cases the interesting question has been raised as to whether the stumps were a part of the original timber right sold by the farmer to the turpentine maker or reverted to the owner of tho land after the treos had been cut. Rapid Trestle Building. The rapid reconstruction of a trestlo was recently carried on at Oalveston, Texas. Fire destroyed 400 feet of tho long railroad trestle which extends from the mainland to the city and stopped traffic. The existence of the orglnization was brought to light by the surrender of a negro who was wanted for a crime. This is a ?*tep in the r'g'it dirtc ion. As soon as it becomes known that the better element of the colored race is willing to help suppress crimes committed by members of the race, there will be a different feeling among the whites. President Roosevelt's action in suspending the negro troops was due to,the fact that the innocent ones refused to give testimo ny against the guilty ones. The Commoner has recently referred to an orginlzation in Alabanm similar .to the one in Texas. The Mexican laboring man, earning 75 cents a day, and the mechanic at $1.25, cannot afford to buy butter at the high, prices. Teachers' Relief Society. Chicago teachers have a relief society. The members pay In $2 a year, and ln^caso of Illness draw $10 a week for four weeks. This Is a safe proposition for tho society and Is a . great Insurance for tho teachers.
