Some of the anti-dispensary papers
that were busy during the last campaign
spreading the unfounded and
silly report that the dispensary was
in a bankrupt condition are now frothing
at the mouth because the dispensary
has paid sixty-three thousand
dollars into the school fund and wiped
out its indebtedness tc the schools.
This is a clear case of "dainm if you
do" or "dam:n if you dont." We are
glad that the dispensary has paid the
school fund up in full. If people will
drink whiskey, we know of no better
purpose to put the money than to educate
their children.

ALASKAN DOGS HALF WOLF.
Invaluable to the Inhabitant*?Serve

The native Alaska dog is known as
the "huskle" or 'malamoot' and Is a
mongrel -one-half timber wolf, says
a writer In Leslie's Weekly. He has
characteristics which, especially fit

him restless, eager to go, and with a
sufficient mixture of dog to temper a
fierceness and treachery which
might, and sometimes does, become

It is a rare occurrence for them
to bite a human being, but they will

provocation, and it Is not an uncommon
sight for half a dozen
"huskies" to hold a pitched battle.
A bucket of cold water will generally
put thoni to flight, but In tin1 majority
of cases the miners pay no attention
to the melee and allow the dogs
to fight It out.

In their thieving propensities, and all
food must bo "cached" out of their
reach. A hungry "huskle" will open
a box of canned beef with ease by
biting through the tin. lie will lie
before tho door of a tent or cabin,
protending to be asleep, when In
reality ho Is waiting for a chance to
ransack the kithchen
Ono day I saw a miner's dinner
wrecked by Ills own dog, a splendid
big, wolfish fellow, who overturned
a pot of beans, and In tho most unconcerned
manner walked off with
tho hot bacon in his mouth.
No matter* what depredations they
may commit, severe nunlshnient. so

furnished by Uncle Sam. Itailroads,
too. appreciate the value of tho
weather service especially in the
Northwest during the blizzard erason

Spring freshets. At. these seasons
transportation officials keep a close
watch on the bulletins of the bureau
and gauge tho movements of their
trains accordingly. The losses thus
avoided frequently are sufficient to
put the balance on tho right side of
tho ledger.
Utilizing Pino Stumps.
The denuding of the American
foests is leading to many odd resources
to supply the deficiency. The
government recently announced that
owing to tho rapid manner in which
forests are being mowed down to
secure wood pulp for paper making
a small army of experts were at
work, hunting for some abundant
material like swamp or prairie grass
tluit would bo fnv
making. Long ago the supply of walnut
lumber for furniture was practically
exhausted and oak has largely
taken lis place. For some time the
turpentine makers have boon puzzled
to find raw material to meot the
growing demands of their trade
wh'ch threatened to make serious
inroads on the pine forests. The
trees were being used much faster
than they could bo grown and this
meant disaster. Then attention was
turned to the refuse of tho forests
already UFed and experiments were
made which demonstrated that the
stumps of the pine trees, which had
orlgnlally been passed over as not
worth the troublo of digging out,
were saturated with raw turpentine.
These stumps Immediately took on
a commercial value which will furnish
small fortunes to tho men who
own them. In some cases the interesting
question has been raised as to
whether the stumps were a part of
the original timber right sold by the
farmer to the turpentine maker or
reverted to the owner of tho land
after the treos had been cut.
Rapid Trestle Building.
The rapid reconstruction of a
trestlo was recently carried on at
Oalveston, Texas. Fire destroyed
400 feet of tho long railroad trestle
which extends from the mainland to
the city and stopped traffic. The construction
froces and materials were
Immediately started to the work, and
by midnight of the same day the
trestle was sufficiently repaired ttf
allow traffic to be resumed.

A dispatch from Galveston, Texas,
announces that an orglnization with
three thousand members has been
formed of the "better class of negroes
of the state for the suppression of
crime." The existence of the orglnization
was brought to light by the
surrender of a negro who was wanted
for a crime. This is a ?*tep in the
r'g'it dirtc ion. The good n groeshave
sullered a great deal oecause of
the action of brutal and lawless negroes.
The whole race has suite red
because so many negroes have spent -a
their time in denouncing mobs and ?
violence without denouncing the jf
crimes I hat called forth mobs and
violence. As soon as it becomes known
that the better element of the colored
race is willing to help suppress
crimes committed by members of the
race, there will be a different feeling
among the whites. President Roosevelt's
action in suspending the negro
troops was due to,the fact that the
innocent ones refused to give testimo
ny against the guilty ones. The
Commoner has recently referred to an
orginlzation in Alabanm similar .to
the one in Texas. It Will be a promishing
sign for the future relation of
the two races when there is such an
organization in every community having
considerable colored population.

the president did not deign to notice
the'tariff question, indications that
that question is conspicuous in the
public mind multiply; In the langauge

monopoly on the American continent
that is plundering the homes of the
American people.

Milk, and milk only, has formed
the diet of six-year-old Arthur
Keene of Penarth, Wales, since birth,
lie has been tempted with the
choicest of solid food to no purpose
and medical men who have examined
him confess thpt the case bathes
them. He Is finely developed and
healthy and his diet each week consists
of thirty pints of milk, mixed
with sugar and a little water.
Butter In Vera Cruz.
Butter consumption at Vera Cruz
Is small because of the high retail
price. American butter sells for 60
cents a pound can, the home-made*
article at 50 cents and Spanish but
ter at 40 cents. Several butter compounds
are also sold, being put up In
five pound cans and mostly used for
cooking purposes. The Mexican laboring
man, earning 75 cents a day,
and the mechanic at $1.25, cannot
afford to buy butter at the high,
prices.
Teachers' Relief Society.
Chicago teachers have a relief society.
The members pay In $2 a
year, and ln^caso of Illness draw $10
a week for four weeks. This Is a safe
proposition for tho society and Is a .
great Insurance for tho teachers. A
cent a day for the school year, or 4
cents a week the year through, provides
$40 In case of an illness that
lasts for a month.
