The Herald comtemplates extensive and costly improvements in its plant in the near future. The subscription list is constantly growing , is well as the business of the job department, and new machinery bo- ' 3omes a necessity in order to handlo 1 its volume of busine*s. ] The case of the State of South x Carolina against the bonding company to recover the shortago in the office of the couuty treasurer could 1 not be reached on the docket last i week, aud this case will likely be \ tried at the Spring term. The I grand jury has required that the I sase be tried as speedily as possible. ' The late heavy rains washed up 1 the trae.t of the Conway, Coast and . Western rail road at places between Pine Island and Myrtle Beach and trains were stopped at the former 1 place for several days. The damage ' has been repaired and the road bed ' is in better condition now than ever before. ' It appears that the reporter of the , Herald was mistaken when he made the statement that Commander Johnson's neck was not broken by the drop. Circumstances, as he viewed them, warranted him in making this < statement, but he has been informed < by the Sheriff that the physicians i sav tl at his neck was broken. This reporter cheerfully yields the point in deference to the opinion of mort? ' ccmpentenrauthorities on such matters. i Work on the new jail is progress- i ing nicely. The walls are now about i six or seven feet above the ground and are going up as rapidly as the ; nature of the work will permit, i That on the court house is also progrossing satisfactorially. Much of the material is on the ground; the foundations have been dug, and as a number of colored brick masons came in on the afternoon train Monday ;we presume that bricklaying has been commenced. Anyhow, it goes without saying that no time will be lost and that we may reasonably expect that, barring some unpreventable and unforseen drawback, both buildings will be completed at the time called for by the contracts. The firm of Fitchett Bros , and Conway Lumber Company are now iuvolved in litigation. Mr. Fitchett was furnishing the logs to the mill under a contract for that purpose. For reasons stated in the papers on file, the lumber company some weeks ago had him enjoined from further interference with their timber rights, and he had been held up ever since. There was no decision of the matter in the court last week, but tho lumber company is under bond for any damage ho may sustain should tho injunction be sot asido. Col. D. A, Spivey was elected Vice Prisident of State Fair Agricultural and Mechanical Society at a meeting held in Columbia last week. This is quite a compliment to Col. Spivey, who was born and raised on a farm, and consequently takes a lively interest in agricultural life and encourages with his advice and pocket undertakings for the better ment of tho condition of Agriculture. It is none the less an honor to Horry because the worth of one of her enterprising and successful sons has been recognized, and Horry makes her best bow in return. Joy News. The health of the community is I generally good. The small crops of cotton are about harvested and wo aie now trying to look after our few potatoes, corn, peas etc., though I guess we arc greatly blessed for the services rendered to Him who gives us the increase. Can wt expect anything better than fraud in election when the plank is made on as rotten a thing as whiskey? Some of the dispensary advocates say they they do not believe in drinking or using whiskey in any form, and wish it (the whiskey) out of existence Some say uso a little for medical purposes, etc. The only question in my mind is, it a good thing? If so let us all get a dispensary at our doors, so our little ones and our wives can enjoy it. If evil, push it as far from us as possible, let us not vote anything to be put to our neighbors doors, we would not ask to bo placed at our doors. The stables belonging to Myrtle Beach Development Company at Myrtle Beach, of which Mr. J. E. Bryan is a large stockholder, and has charge, wore consumed by lire ibout the hour of midnight last SunJay night, the cause of the conflagration being as yet unknown. Three mules were burned to death and mother so badly injured tlmt it is likely it will die, A la/ge, lot of hay and the like valued at 11000.00 was a total loss, as well as about tViree hundred bushels ot corn. The dwelling of Mr. ap& Mrs. J. K. Bryan was near the stables and barn, and very much endangered by the lire. The dwelling caught mice on top, but heroic cllorts'savm! it. The cause of the lire was reported \s unknown, and it is stated that there was no insurance carried on the property. . * ? ? Tyler and Shu# Tyler were lodged in jail under a sentence rendered by the court at the Spring term, on an indictment for adnltry. E. J. Tyler or Jack Tyler, as lie is known, was placed in the county chain gang, and Shug was ^jnt to the State penitentiary. It turned out that tne defendants had never been arrested at the time of their trial under this charge and at the time of the trial, they w$ro both absent in tho State oi Florida. Tiny were botn brought up last week under habeas corpus proceedings before Judge Klugh and on Saturday he signed an order discharging them from the sentence. There were other warrants already in the sheriff's hands for the arrest of Tyler, and he wafe trans ferred from the gaing to the county jail until he car. make bond 1111(101" these other charges. In the court of Common Pleas fast week, the ease of Battle against Capo ' 1 .mi* Lumber Company was concluded on Thursday, and the jury i rendered a verdict in favor of the Plaintiff, James Battle for $500.00 damages Lie had sued for $1,000.00. After this thee were but two days in which to try other cases. The next case tried was Joseph Todd vs. \V. A. Carroll, a suit brought by the plaintiff' for the recovery of 150 acres of land lying on Kingston Lake and in possession of the defendant Carroll. After remaining out for a long time the jury returned a verdict in favor of the defendant in the case. Attorneys for tlie plainiill made a motion for a new trial on the minutes of the court on Saturday, but the Judge refused to grant a new trial. The court, then proceeded with | ilic case of John Ward pluiulilT against Neal L^owler and Martha Kowler, brought for the recovery of damages for trespass to real estate.
