? PAYS THE PENALTY. (Con tin nod from first page) held in |M)sition by the sldo of the . rabing ncaro t the "debtors' coil" ! by a pin. I'Yom this liar proj -els 1 two horizontal bars upon which the J trap rests when ready to be sprung There are a sot of triggers controbed by a small cord and tied to the railing near which the lover is held in position and by which the Sheriff stands. The ropo by which the hanging is done passes from the tloor to a tilook and tackle, which is fastened to the ceiling directly overhead and over the trap, and then passes through anVugur hole in the wall of the ''debtors' cell" where it hangs with a picco of wood tied to it crosswise, the distance from the end of it is governed by the drop desired. When till is in readiness the Sheriff pulls out the pin, lets down the lever and cuts the cord, the trap falls and the soul of the un fortunate person is launched in'o eternity. T11K I > K A T11 WATCH. The death watch was set. and all through the night sleepless eyes kept vigil over the slumbers of the doomed young man. The lirsL watch es of the night were spent by Johnson in praying and singing, and weeping, but soon he calinned down and blessed sleep came to his relief. 11c ate but little or no supper that night and it was the sarin? way a breakfast on the morning of the fatal Friday but at the noon day mom lie he ate more but by no means heartily. During the morning he was attended by the ministation of his ? devoted father, other relatives and by his faithful spiritual advisers. T1IK DEATH MAUCH At 1 o'clock, the condemned man having been previously prepared for death, the march from the eel! to the gallows was commenced. On arriving at the gifllows religious services were held by Revs. Wait and Shinn. of the Methodist and Baptist eluirch respectively. The doomed man then took his positiion in 4 C i I a ... i runt ui l I?e WllllOSSCS unci Ins logs und hands were securely fastened. Up to this time lie had stoutly maintained his innocence and denying all knowledge of the crime. And now, at this moment, with certain death staring him in the face, when asked if he had anything to say, replied in firm voice, with eyes turned towards the heavens, iirmly replied: "i AM INNOCENT, AND YOU WILL HANG ME FOR ANOTHER'S CRIME." As lie srood there he wore none of the features which characterizes the brutal murderer. His mouth and chin were firm, showing strong determination and strength of charactor to carry to successful cornple tion that which he undertook to accomplish. He was neatly atiired in a business suit, even having 011 his shoes. Ht was placed on the trap, the rope adjusted around his neck and the black cap put over his bead and ho was ready for execution His last words wero: U1 hope to meet you iu fleavcn," and then collapsed, and the trap was sprung, and the soul of Commander Johnson went out to meet its God, In seventeen minutes after trap fell, Drs.
