L. 11., who is so much interested about the so called foul play. I would like to say to the readers of the Herald a part of the report is a mistake. Hy the order of the Magistrate. N. 15. Cox, who told me to make this arrest and bring the unknown negro to him. he. the so called Mitchell, had been acting very disorderly and drawing his gun, I made the arrest on or about tho2ttrd day of June, and as I came on with him about one mile this side of lied 111u 11 two negro men waylaid the road, caught at 'ho mules and using profane language; wanted to know what was the matter. The\ sceminly were in a state of intoxication and made an assault. I jumped out of the buggy and b:oko the run over one of them :ind they were very sassy. I shot at them and they ran away. We then drove on our way to Magistrate Cox's. Mr. A. Hardee, who was deputized to go with me, was called to his family on tin4 way and then I and the negro were by ourselves and my business called me a step or two from him lie made his escape and left his broken gun with me and if Mr. J. It. Ij. II.. who is so interested about it. wili come down I will let him take the remainder of the broken gun to keep until Mitchell comes back aftei it. I do claim to be a law abiding citizen and a worker for the upbuilding of Horry county, and I can't see why J. 15. H. 11. can be interested unless Mitchell was due him some money and he did not get it before he left. We voted the dispensary out and we can see a big dilVerence since in our section and if the blind tiger had not be so plentiful at lied Hlull the negroes would not have been so brave as to waylay the road. I don't think. ' J. J. Todd. Mil. IIAHDEK's VERSION. Mr. Editor: dense allow me space in your paper for a few words in reference to what J. II. L. II. s.ivs about the dispensary and the arrest of the negro Mitchell. .J. H. L. II. says the Magistrate knew nothing about it, but the deputy, J. J. Todd, and myself started from Mr. Cox's with instruction's to ''bring the negro in", but J. 15. L. 11. is not the Magistrate and he does not know. He also says we met two other negroes and beat them almost todeath. 'I'llis is in part true. Tlioy wore sitting on the side of the road and when wo drove up they attacked us and we just had to light oui' way, just as we would have done had .1 II. Ij. II., or any one eh-e, attacked us. llo says that Mitchell was charged with insulting a white man by the name of Mr. Souls but he made a mistake. It was Mr. R. II. Rals, a cripple man that could not help himself, but we cannot expect any bet tor of him for he knows nothing much about it, for if he does he does not write like it. lie seeins to think the negro was ynched, but the negro got away from Mr. Todd and is in North Carolina I guess, and if J. Well, Mr. Editor, I have been looking around through the township. or some portions of it. to see if the wet weather was a general thing. I find cotton and tobacco badly damaged. Corn seems to be doing fairly well, though in the Exile neighborhood 1 find some tolerable fair crops of cotton and tobacco not withstanding the lains. On my tour through tlie different places, I saw one thing which seriously attracted my attention, the new idea in the turpentine industry, which is a ew departure in boxing timber. Mr. ioe Lewis lias in place of cutting boxes in the tree, dug them in the groin.?! We haven't vet ascertained whet;., or not Mr. Lewis is meeting \sitfi success. To any one who is in sympathy with this idea, we will say that we suppose Mr. Lewis will gladly furnish any information necessary. Mr. Lewis must be an enterprising citizen, though a stranger to the writer, and we will say for him that he seems to want to stick close to the old adage. When a young man has labored hard on the farm and spent many a wakeful hours over his books while others slept-, and has the necessary accomplishments for public life, then it is that our liberal hearted Horry people give him a hearty welcome, and stand behind him in all of his noble aspirations. We are also glad to note the rapid progress that the girls of our county are making, in that so many are becoming self sup porting. It should be the chief aim and desire of every girl to prepare In rself for life's duties, so that she will not have to depend on marrying some sorry man for future support ami a home. (Had to see them lilling good positions in the schools and olliccs. and so rauidly coming to the front. Miss (lussie Williamson of Fair HluIT, N. C.. is teaching a music class in this section . She is located atthchoinc of M. T. Floyd. Her (lever disposition along with her very excellent musical ability has already made for her many new friends. No visiting to mention, but a few returns. The two d aim liters of the Rev. Mr. Wright, who have been oil at school for some? time are now home for the summer, looking as fi'esh as roses iu spring time. The Misses Johnson have returnid home from the summer school. Hoping the correspondents will continue to improve their instructions and wishing the Herald much success. Header. Poplar. The health of this section is not very ^rood at this writing. Quite a few of our younc folks attended the picnic at lloniewood on the tth, and reported a ^ood time. Rev. J. 11, Baker filled his appointment at Mt. Arial last Sunday, K, Id. Moore of lloniewood was in this section last Sunday. Kdward Sessions passed here last Saturday en route to Nichols, S. C.
