A Cas? Last Saturday before Magistrate Jenrctte. that was Somewhat Sensational. Magistrate Jcnrettc last Saturjay tried the ca^o of the State vs. Miss Eflie Vaught who had been charged with petty larceny in u warrant issued by Magistrate H. II. Cox, but later tranferred to the magistrate here. The jury empannellcd on the ease had ha' dly enterh1 the jury room when they returned with a verdict of ' not guilty. ' rV large crowd had gathered in the jourt house to hear the cuse, and here was prolonged cheering when' ihe verdict was rendered, so that .he judge found it impossible to :eep oruer The prosecutor in the case wa* a VIr. John Watson, who claimed that vhilc be. was in the store of Messrs. LI. Parser & t'o., Miss Eflie came in md bought several small articles rom the clerk That he also had nade a small purchase and laid down i fifty cent piece on the counter near where the young lady and the clerk wo re standing, and then walked ofl lo one side or to some other part of Hie store. After Miss Eflie left he dairned he could not find his money. It was admitted that she handed the ilerk a fifty cent piece of money to lay for purchases, but it was iworn by Mr. J 11. Neely that ho landed her this piece of money beore she entered the store, the pur shaseu mentioned as being made by ler being for him. Mri Nceli^' javo other testimony which Seemed o contradict that given by Mr.' Moms Lewis, the chief witness for the prosecution, wiio iiad sworn that he saw Miss Vaught pick up a fifty :cut piece from the counter. The estiniony of Mr. Neoley showed hat this witness was on the porch luring the transaction in the store. The character of Miss Vaught is icyond reproach. She is well known lore, havmg atteuded thr Burroughs school. She has been teaching in she public schools of the county and liatle many friends wherever she vent. The news of her trial had spread about and her friends crowd d the court room when the trial lo^un. The proof by the State so ltterly failed to make out a cose hat no arguments were made by lie attorneys. When the jury reurncd so quickly with a verdict that 'indicated her, there was much sheering, and members of the jury snd others pressed forward to shake lot' hand No one here even had my suspicion from the beginning hat she could even think of committ ng such a crime as that charged.
