On the corner ?f Main Street and th Avenue is part of a square pon which there are no building; ronting Main Street with the ex option of the small store immedi tely on the corner. Some one re rarked a few days ago that a better rop of weeds could not be produced ny where than the growth which is ow ripening on these vacant lots, t is indeed true. The weeds in ome places are very dense and tall nougn to conceal a horse. The tray animal which is being chased nd finds that patch of weeds, is artunate. Putting jokes aside, we believe hat those weeds are a serious mcace to thejrood health of the town, f not now, they will be later as soon s they begin to decay. The promoters of the enterprise, it . seems, are now getting in earnest Opening of Burroughs Graded [ School. 1 The Burroughs Graded School t opened last Monday A large number of pupils were enrolled. Several of the trustees and patrons ! were out at the opening exercises. 1 Rev. J. W. Elkins opened the exercises with prayer and then Col. 1). A. Spivey presented Col. C. IV Quattlebaum, who in a few words intro1 duccd the Superintendent to the pupils. He also took occasion to give some good advice to the children. Col. Quattlebaum also stutcu that the trustees had determined to collect contingent fees as they have heretofore. These fees go into the general fund of the school and cna ble it to run about two months Ion 13. J. Wells, the Superintendent of ( the school is a Graduate ol the South Carolina College and has taught successfully for four years. ' Miss Rosa S'uiw, the first assistant, was educated at Winthrop and has taught for several years.
