He will live in Washington. At Canton last week the President and Colonel Hryan met ex changing a cordial greeting. Col. Hryan was present to speak to a street fair and attended the reception given the President as he was passing through. The President has been petitioned to act as mediator in the South African troubles and endeavors if possit.lr. 1 n* ? uiu hi aviu i war in uu! 1 runsvuai. We very much fear that our Executive is too busy with war just now to prove of much benefit to the con tending parties. The President with several members oMiiseauinet start oil out West on an extensive trip of -speech-making last week. Well, the West is the place to go in this emergency, where the opposition to the war is decidedly pronoun- 1 and where the leaders see the imp dance of breaking up the anti-war '.'eeling. The circumstances a trending the late sitting of our court will be productive of much good if the lessons are heeded. The testimony, and arguments of eminent counsel, were listened to by many young men and boys and together with the lucid explanations of law by Judge lionet ,.,111 win jMuvi- ui greui oenent we mist. The advanced price in cotton, it, being about one and a half cents higher than last year has been a great blessing, which not only is enjoyed by the planters, but gives an upward tendency to every department of trade. Every department of business is strengthened thereby and our people generally have a stronger grip than for many years. The State Fair at Dallas, Texas last week was tremendous. Hon. William J. Bryan was present and thousands of people from all over the country assembled to do honor ' to the democratic leader. Wherever he goes great crowds greet him. No matter in what corner of this great country lie appears, just such scenes await him. His magnetism is unquestioned ?His political enemies admit it and it disturbs thorn almost beyond the limitof endurance. The incident between Governor MuSweoney and the news boys while in New York is tender, and leaked t out through the Governors friends, some witnessing it. Having boon one of the "elan" 'in his younger days and desiring to show his young son who was with him, what his father did at his age, he pushed his way into a great crowd of newspaper boys. As soon as they became aware of who he was, Governor McSwceney received an ovut on tha* was thrilling and which South Carolina's priiitor-boy Coventor enjoyed, t us well as all who witnessed it. Til Kit a has been more fighting in Luzon uud it will likely continue day by day to a greater or lesser extent t, throughout the dry season with re- <i suits similar to those which have v marked the conduct of the war for j the past several months. Our , troops can drive thein back wliorev i er they llnd them and inflict the usual li slaughter, but they drop back to ' some other point and harrass our j' army continually. The intermina- j ble length to which the. struggle can i be continued is not promising, 'nor * o 4l.? ..f iV .... ; 1 I > :n- ^llll IV VU villi MllllRTS, WHICH . { is not wanting in uny parhcilar, , seems to dampen the order of the i Filipinos. This war can he brought t to an end by force, can be settled on ' (! rant s plan, but the amount of force I that will be called into requisition, , and the sacrifice that it will be nee- i c.ssary to make are fearful things to 1 contemplate. Dr. Maxcy Dee. a : prominent physicians, about HO years old, shot and fatally wounded his own father, Dr. II. .1 Dee, at tholnlter's home. The shooting seems to have been the result of the father rebuking tho son for some nngry words spoken to the housekeeper, Dr. H.J. Dee and his son, Maxcy, live together and practice medicine together. The younger gentleman was in Darlington yesterday, and is said to have been drinking, which inay account for the terrible deed. The shooting occurred at the Lee homestead, at Lydia, very late yesterday afternoon. The Leo family is one of the most prominent in this county, and is a wealthy one. The tragedy is decoy regretted by all the friends of the parties. ^ On the 10th of December, 1897, I lev. S. A. Donahoe, paster M. E. Church, South, Pt. Pleasant, W.
