If the coming acts <>f our now Governor are to be in Uoop;ng with this appointment, ho will do well and seeure to himself jjfreat credit. W ii kn Hon. It. It. While Horry has a noble champion in its present Senator and one who is t he careful custodian of his peoples interest, we regret to have to f^i\o him iipaiul shall have to look about for bis successor. Where is the man? Who is he? tsring mm out. Wk received a lot tar from Mr. .1. T. Mayors, of Savannah last Monday conveying the gral ing intelligence thai ho was not do; t hut still living and in bettor health Mian for years. Wo had our infor..,''.'; >11 from a young man of George*,.??>n recently hero, and who a few days previous had boon in Savannah. The publication of the announcement was rather a departure from our usual course as we genorally like to have the facts. Under the circumstances and with the information we had we made the announcement. Wo .ire glad, very glad that it is all a mistake and that friend Mayors still lives and may "he and his family all live long and prosper," Tut announcement of Governor Kllerbe's death is not a surprise, as his friends for months have been expecting the sad event. All that human skill could devise and every loving act that kindly hearts could suggest, or gentle hands perform, was done to nroloner his life and miti gate liis pain, but alas, death which stops not at the door of peasant or King, crossed the threshhold of the! Governor's home last Friday eve \ mug, claiming him as its victim. There is Homcthinjf unusually sad in this circumstance, when it is considered that rarely have men attained such high position at tuchan early age. Just thirty-four years old and serving his second term as Governor. He had no enemies in his latter days and the manifestations of sympathy that have been so graciously tendered him in his sickness, no doubt softened his pillow and ameliorated somewhat the pangs of disease. Had he been allowed to linish his second term, unimpaired by declining health, he would have had increased opportunity for carrying out a cherished wish of being "the pacificator of his people." That governor Ellerbc had the good of the people at heart, no one has distrustkit *. * . I - v ed, and we regret that his early end 1 ept Inni from currying out soini nobly devised plans. "The paths ol glory load but to the grav?," but \vc arc pleased to know that iu laying down the burdens and vcxatiom eares iiu'ident to publie life, he lias entered upon a more glorious tielil where there are no burdens to beai and where all toils and eares are un known. While many of us did not concur with him in some of lib publie act >, all are agreed as to tin honesty of his motives and his on sullied public and private character, Horry lias another member of tin Stall' Administration in tin* parson of Hon. II. f?. Scarborough, who atSpeaker of the Senate }>r<> tempore, succeeds to 1110 oMicc of I lieutenant (iovernor, made vacant by Hie dcatli of the (iovernor and the elevation of Lieutenant (iovernor Mi-Sweeney to the Chief Magistracy of t lie St ate. His home people, always proud <>l his advancement and who predict for him a brilliant future, will watch with eagerness his stepping to the front. As a successful lawyer, he has 1 litis early in life made an enviable reputation, asan orator and publie debater, he is well at the front and his horizon is brilliant with c\cry promise of hope and usefulni ss.
