Kllerbe's death is not a surprise, as
his friends for months have been expecting
the sad event. All that human
skill could devise and every loving
act that kindly hearts could
suggest, or gentle hands perform,
was done to nroloner his life and miti
gate liis pain, but alas, death which
stops not at the door of peasant or
King, crossed the threshhold of the!
Governor's home last Friday eve
\ mug, claiming him as its victim.
There is Homcthinjf unusually sad in
this circumstance, when it is considered
that rarely have men attained
such high position at tuchan early
age. Just thirty-four years old
and serving his second term as Governor.
He had no enemies in his
latter days and the manifestations
of sympathy that have been so graciously
tendered him in his sickness,
no doubt softened his pillow and
ameliorated somewhat the pangs of
disease. Had he been allowed to linish
his second term, unimpaired
by declining health, he would have
had increased opportunity for carrying
out a cherished wish of being
"the pacificator of his people." That

people at heart, no one has distrustkit

Dr. Brooks Talks Sense.
New Yonk, Juno 4. -Sermons
touching upon the recent lynching in
the South wore preached hy*u number
of tin1 colored pastors in the city
to-day. In St Mark's Church the
Kev. Dr. Brooks in his sermon on
lynching says* "The trouble is at
t lie doors of God's oh ureses. If they
would arouse themselves, in less than
five years there 4vould be no more
lynching. But the negro must take
the advice of his friends. Self-do
fence and not revenge must be his
reward. Sin must be stopped and
then the crime which grows out of it
will stop, and I say this as one of
t he race. The negro must have and
show more respect for all womanhood
white as well as black, lie does not
respect the women of his own color
enough.'
