The Jlofffir Herald, o? Published Every Thursday, CONWAY, S. C. NOV. 9, 1893. "LOCAL NEWS. _____ i A cool wave struck Conway on Saturday night. There is a family in this county ten in number?but one of whom weighs over 100 pounds. f ? o? Land sales last Monday seemed to J "go cllP (irst rate* Three separate tracks sold for $80, $100, and *160 respectively. The Muron County /Vor/rtw has been enlarged to cieht naoes. The local and correspondence department are wall inado up. There was sent on the Sir. Driver last Monday to Mr. S. S. Dusenbury for distribution among tIk;storm sufferers on the crock, one package of bed clothing and $9.23. Some other supplies have previously been sent. Our streets would look much better, and be much better, with more shade trees. This is a good opening for some philanthropic gentleman with a large heart to prove himself such. Some trees have been set out this full?chunks our progressive merchant Capt. Oliver hut many more are needed. On account of his annual settle incut, Treasurer Long called in his his appointments at Powollville, Bnyboro, Sunford, Boris, Hound Swamp and Hammond. lie filled those appointments, starting at Howell vi lie OU the '20th nml rrivinrr <1 .!.? - " - fS* ' "'h> ' ?'V I to a place. If he don't keep them and refuse to order them for you, send direct to the Ohio : Chemical Co., Lima, Ohio. They will send you full particulars free. i The annual settlement of the An- 1 ditor and Treasurer of this county i wtts made this week. Senator Dor - < ham was commissioned to act for ( Comptroller General Kllerbe. This settlement is for the fiscal year ending Nov. 1st, 189)5. We haven't the room for tin oxtended report of the full details of 1 the settlement; but a few figures l.~ ~r A ' 1 maj i>u ?u imerest to our reauers. ( The amount paid out on the order ( of tim County Commissioners, c?>v -j ere 1 by Regular County Tax is $'J,- j ' G'-i4.?")?"); for printing, stationery, < roads and bridges, puUAic buildings, < is $1774.07. Court expenses amount- | eel to $1357.55. There has heen paid to trial jus tices and their constables, during the year just ended $840.00. These have turned over to the County I 151.94. ' , o ( The Boaid of Kxaminers met tins week and considered the work of ap- j plicants for positions as public school teachers. .Most' of tlie applicants ' passed the ordeal, some tor the grade 1 applied for, some for a lower grade, ' and some were rejected. Ono fact ' was painfully apparent in several pa- < pers examined. This fact shows 1 great carelessness, or indifference to < tho rules of orthography. It is true, to spoil well is no honor but to mis- 1 spell is a great discredit, especially to ' applicants for certificates of coinpe- < i .? ?i. .i. j-i.- ?? lunujf iu lunuu i u(* young^ouea now 10 _ spell. What would a teacher think < of a grammar scholar who would write ''admition'' for admission "artifitial" for artificial, "Ghnrgo" for Chicago, -'tintill" for until, "Ust" for taste, "responsable" for responsible, "rfoct'' for effect-, "ci nearly" for sincerely, "in closed" for inclosed, uMaralhoro'' for Marlboro. When the heat of the human body falls to 81) degrees it is timo to call the undertaker. If the school physiologies teach such errors they ought to be banished from the school rouns. We have called attention to these derelictions, not to upbraid or condemn, hut to induce careful thinking and the formation of correct habits iu this particular. The habit once formed it is as easy to spell correctly as incorrectly. irV' *. A correspondent writes from Loris: A weather signal oflice has been opened here, under the super vision of Mr. (Jeo. L. Prince. The ffrst signal was raised last Saturday, Nov. 4th; but some unknown person had cut the Hag into strips. It looks , af if a 1'. S. deotective may he need ed to protect our weather information bureau. I The plank side walks now on some of our streets have undergone repair, i This has been much needed for a long time. A little more interest in public comfort by our people will give us good side walks on the other streets in town. 10 very body would he glad to see this improvement; but. nobody moves. r-0 In the report of the Comptroller (ienerul on the pensioners of the State, Horry is put down 37. The largest number is in Spartanburg, 203. IMCRSON A I.. Major Henry L Buck, of Bucksport, passed through town last Monday. Mr. and Mrs. L. 1\ Sarvis passed through town last Thursday on their way lionie from Prospect llarhor, Me. where they ha*e been spending the summer. State Senator .John 1\ Dcrhatn is < in town.
