The I'nited States Senate continues to kill time in debating the silver question. If tlio discussion throw any light on the subject the time might ho profitably consumed, hut that is not tbo purpose. There is not a man in the body who is master of the question; at least, he j hap not shown himself. One side makes most startling statements as ; to the ctl'ect of the repeal of tho purchasing clause of the Sherman law, that it would demonetize silver i and run it out of circulation; tho O til I V Cilll tollilu thill it luniilil t.iil n ifcct the monetary value of si N or, or its circulation. Both sides can not bo right. Perhaps no question has excited more discussion, both adverse and favorable, than the present Pisponsury system in its attempts to control and monopolize the sale of whiskey. Good men high up in the OOlllieils of flu* iliffni-niit ( 'liiirnlniu take very different positions in relation to the Dispensary?some earnestly advocating its support, while others advocate a diametrically opposite course. Some of the advocates of the measure contend that the opposition and advocacy are coterminous with opposition or support of Gov. Tillman. This wo do not believe. We do not believe that a conscientious man's moral sense would be swayed and swerved by his personal relation to (Jov. Tillman. Wo admit that some fanatical partisans would anorovo anvthimr i;?v ii J " Tillman might do or suggest, and Others would condemn. The lirst question to settle in relation to the Dispensary is; What was the purpose of the legislature in enacting the law? Was it to restrict and control the sale of whiskey or was it to make the sale a source of revenue of to the State? We y ? have not the slightest doubt that some of the legislators acted conscientiously and thought the law was' WIPSed in I lie inlernvt of i\i? ol tilii f u\n 1 I " 1" " ? ? "? Hut has it been enforced as a prohibitory ineasure!" The Laurens and Lancaster cases do not prove it, and other cases might bo cited to showthat the execution of the law anticipates large sales. One of tho ugliest features of the j syt to in is the attempt by some to commit tho Church to its support. The Devil could desire no more powerful weapon to tight the cause' of temperance, sobriety and Christianity than for the Church to endorse the Dispensary- VVIiy are the advocates of the system so anxious to have good men to occupy the position of Dispensers? Do they recognize the fact that the salo of whiskey is humiliating and degrading and they desire to elevate tho position to the plane of other honorable official positions? They say nothing about having good men to Jill tho other offices incident to State and County governments. The inference is legitimate that they desire to equalize the official positions by putting good men in the degrading office and let the other offices honor the men holding them. If church members are allowed to ac? as Dispensers, how can tho Church discipline members for drinking whiskey? And how can the Church member as a Christian dispenser of whiskey as a beverage pray for tlie success of his chosen occu pat ion? Does success mean large ? soles or diminishing sales? Large soles imply increased drinking or drunkenness, while diminishing sales imply the contrary. "Woo unto him that giveth his S^^^^^^^noUTliko a serpent, am) . stin^oth like an adder."
