j,ne Hor Herald, Published Every Thursday. E. NORTON, Editor J. T MAYERS, Gen'l. Manager. CONWAY, S. C., MARCH 2, 18G3. A It HOW HEADS, The Devil sugar coats his pills. God both punishes and rewards. Contentment is the guide for riches. The holy spirit don't pay double visits. Ornamental men are often moth eaten. God expects onlv what you are able to do. You are not saved by creeds, but by grace. Clod don't help ti c man with folded hands. Politeness is the pass word of a gentleman Suffering is (uxl'scrucible test His gold in. If you are for God you are with Him in good works. The house of a drunkard is the Devil's finest painting. Work for God is paid for in ucoin of unchanging value. Sunday religion won't cut much of a figure in eternity Glory hallelujah's and responsive emeus is not religion. r> Don't put a saloon patron on a Temperance Committee. Count tho cost of rascality and you will hack out from it. Grave stone inscriptions are not copied on the Dook of life. Theology may case a conscience, but it can never save a soul. The roll of heuften will not be caU led from the church books. If you love yourself, you ought to love God and your neighbor too. A mean man passing for a saint, has a short road of deception. When providing other things don't forget to count in eternity. A dollar for the heathen and a kick for the tramp is a bad showing. The Jews tortured llitn physically but you are grieving 11 is spirit. To be a Christian means to be satisfied with God and his dealings. The Devil loads his biggest gun for the man who holds family prayer. The dumb man will carry a better record into eternity than most men. Don't go in with an ungodly man for gain, for you thereby help the Devil. Extend a special invitation to righteousness to make your house his house. When von nersistontlv vmlnto v g - - ^ ?J ' ?*"vv (Joels law don't complain at the punishment. Marrying a man to reform him, is committing suicide to escape an epidemic. Religion is not carried in the head nor in the pocket book, but in the heart. Some men talk about sin as if it were only a little fun with a good time and no penalty When love turns to hatred you may be sure the Devil has been putting in faithful work. I "Whosoever will," knocks the props out from under this talk of "you can't help yourself." Men will preach themselves hoarse about the heathen, while a neighbor is ?lying for bread. Heaven don't have cushioned pews for the rich and a hard bench for the friendless pauper. ^ Silence against a public evil because of fear is an evidence that grace is lacking in your heart. Don't parley with the Devil, nor call him sweet names, but just tap him over the head at every corner When you have invested your life in a supply of faith you have a larger working capital than a mil lionaire. To steal a hog is a crime against a neighbor's pocket; to deceive a woman is a crime against a human heart. You may be a B. T. or a I). D., but if you can't preach the simple gospel of Christ you are a colossal ignoratnr.s. We need the application of Christ's gospel, which means, food for the hungry, clothing for the poor and salvation for all. A neighborhood scandal gets all over the community before breakfast while a church announcement falls dead from the pulpit. When a preacher lays by goods and bunds to support him in old age, he fails to trust Clod to do that which He has promised. Half the town wfll turn nni an auction, while the prayer meeting gets hardly enough to make the preacher feel comfortable* Kitchen Lore. Jticc with Cheese.?Boil half a pound of rice; drain and shake dry; . .JOHf-. . J put a layer of this in a pudding-dish season with salt and pepper and dot with bits of butter. Grate a quarter j of a pound of cheese, and sprink e each layer of riec with the cheese. Let the last layer be of rice. Whip one egg with a gill of milk, and pour over all; sprinkle with crumbs, dot with butter, and brown in tlie oven. ()>fsf? r Bring to a boil a, dozen and a half of oysters in their j own li<|iio?, to which two tahloj spoonfuls of good strong vinegar have been added, with white and ; red peper and salt for seasoning; drain, and cut oysters in dice so n> not to injure their appearance- Wash la head of celery and cut ihe edible | parts in dice; mix with the oysters, and keep in a very cold place until ready to serve, when cover wiih a j mayonnaise or.salad dressing. Oysters ((ml line on. This is a I somewhat novel way of cooking the luscious bivalve, railed by our Ku gliHi cousins "I'igs in Blankets." We prefer it without the name. Have as many thin slices of salt (not smoked) bacon as you have large oysters; wrap each oyster in a slice of bapon, and fasten with a tiny skewer?a small wooden toothpick i will do; have ready a hot frying-pan and lay them in side by side turning to allow the bacon to color slightly all around' Have a tiny square of thin, buttered toast for each one; add a tablespoonful of butter and a spoonful of milk or cream to the | liquor in the pan, pour this equally over the toast, lay oim of the rolls 011 each, ai d serve. .s'for/-.? There is a great deal of unreliable information go-i ing the rounds cf. many papers, professiong to tell how to run a stock-pot. Such as, for instance, that a vessel can be kept on the back of the stove, and bones, scraps! of meat and vegetables put into it after each meal, and kept constanI 11 v simmerioir. niwl tlii?t from rlii^ J C . ' mess good soups run bo obtained. If there is a family of any size, there should bo enough of the bones and remains of poultry and meat and game to make a roup at least four times a week without buying fresh meat for the purpose. The most satisfactory way to do this, however, is to keep a dish in your larder or ice box, to receive such hits and the cold gravies for a day or two, and then make as much broth rVotn them as thtfir quantity will allow. In a hoarding-house, or a very large family, it may he possible to keep a stock-pot constantly simmering, but the broth should bestrai icd off and the hones and vegetables thrown j out every twenty-four hours. Vegetables should not be put into it until an hour before the soup is to he removed. If soup is to he boiled three hours, use one quart of cold water to every pound of bone and meat, in the proportion of one of the former to three of the hitter. If it is to boil six hours (and where time is no object this should always he allowed), ad J two quarts to every pound of meat; this will reduce to one quart by boiling must he slow and steady, and the skimming must ho thorough* Inattention to these 1 i ? l i i . % .. ueiaiis ciouus ine stock ami makes it dark. Abut one hour before the stock is done, ad 1 the usual bunch of soup herbs, one carrot, one turnip and one onion stuck with three clo ves. This is the proportion for four j quarts of plain stock. Simmer an 1 hour longer, strain into an earthen 1 jar, and leave it stand to cool, //n con-' cre<!. 1 f there is time to let it get perfectly cold, the fat maybe remov ed in a solid cake; if not it may be skimmed off, ami in either ease it is excellent for frying. Many housewives do not find it necessary to use a hit of lard, preferring beef suet tried out and mixed with tho clarified fat from the top of soups. Great Men's Father* Homer was a tanner's son. Hope's father was a merchant. MTlton was tne son of copyist. Mozart's father was u book binder. Charles Lamb was a servant's son. The father of Cowley was a gro cer.
