A new mercantile business will be started in Conway at an early day. J. M. Oliver and I J. T. Ilynian have formed a co-partnership and will run a business in the new store of Capt. .(. M. Oliver. A lien belonging to Mr. \V. L. Hardee on Ruck Creek was accidentally covered in a barrel in a barn and remained for about seven weeks without food or water. She was nearly starved, but has recovered. The heavy freeze interfered with holding the first Quarterly Confer ence for Conway Circuit at the time appointed, and therefore the time has been set for February 22nd, at Zion Church. o The IIkiui<i> has subscribers in nearly half the counties of Georgia, 1 *1 !- 1 - ' huh i iiciii in neariy every county in South Carolina, find has them scattered all over the* United States, so you see its circulation is not confined to one little scope of country. We have been just as indulgent as we possibly could, owing to the hard times, but we are compelled to have some remuneration, and do not wait until you got the money to pay with, but bring us some kind of country produce, moat, corn, chickens, potatoes, otc. Now, don't all bring tho same thing. t C. L. Johnson, J. A. Mayo and Jos* Todd commissioners of railroad st^ok for Conway township J. 11. Suggs and N. E. Ilardwick for Simpson Oreok and J. C. Bryant for Green Sea went to Wilmington this weok to attend an adjourned meeting of the Stockholders of the W. C. & C. Railway Co., on the 31st. If any other of the commissioners went we have failed to get the name. One from Bayboro started and turned back at Mt. Tabor. It would have been more businesslike and satisfactory to have appointed a committee at the meeting on the 17th, Jany. 4 - . ^ I Oat* planted in the f ill arc about ' all killed, so nearly so tlu\? it might be bettei to replant. j We are informed that some of our new merchants contemplate erecting at an early day a mammoth store 110 feet long 50 feet wide and 25 feet high. There is somo dissatisfaction with the disposition of the monev realized ' from the sale of bonds based upon the mortgage of the W. C. & C. railroad, and the commissioners on , their return from Wilmington in consultation agreed to call a Township meeting in each railroad town* ! ship to consult about the ways and means to send a committee to Wil ' mington to1 thoroughly investigate the books of the old Company. The plan is for each railroad township to meet on Saturday Feb. 11, and t.tio people to confer as to ways and means, appoint delegates to meet in Conway on Wednesday Feb. 15, and this meeting 'ducts the committee. The investigation will cost something and each railroad town ship is expected to supply its pro rata share. The February WUU Awtikc h is a delightful reminder of Tennyson in Carroll Burton's "Child-Life at Farringford," described by one who act; ually visited and played with the Tennyson boys. Martin 1 Downing tells about "(Jonch I'earls" and "Rao," the lit tie Colorado girl, has another series of letters on "winter Ranch Life." A splendid story | by Alexander Ritchie. "The I'ilot of the Nantucket Shoals," opens the: i number with all the rush of the sea and the blinding spray of those dreaded shoals. It is finely ill list raited by l'ollak. Gertrude Smith hae a capital western story, "The Little Taylors Alone;" Abby M. Oanncthas a homespun story, "Hetty's Red Gown," and Anna F. Durham has a country, "In the Hiatus Box." After several years have expired if again asked to pay, to get angry, use abusive, insulting language? Can anyone that will be have in that way be a tit teacher to train youthful minds? I n some States it is the law that any one who con Id not prove a good moral character should not be employed to teach in the public schools, ought such a per sou to he employed in any position of influence in tho State of South Carolina? Kn^iuukh. Tho crying shame of our time is tho taking up of goods without a i reasonable prospect of paying for them. Such practice |umlerminc the ? f I I morality and debauch the manhood of our youth and young men. Thoughtful men can see the reaction of such unholy practices upon honest men. The wholesale merchant must in crease the per cent, on his goods to recoup his losses by defaulting re- i tailors and the retail merchant must! lay a larger per cent, on liis goods to prevent loss by dishonest purchasers, so that in the end the honest consumer pays the debts of had men. No man, be be merchant or farmer, can do business long on a losing basis the drain o a his lvsoaivo* is too heavy, he must either discontinue business or go to the wall* A man may be so circumstanced that he cannot then meet his obligations, but that fact does not justify him in denying and repudiating! them. Certain principles in every honest man compel one to aei<nowl- 1 edge that an honest effort to discharge ? debt is for the present satisfactorv. Cessation of effort mnl :i disposition to evade the obligation | by hook or crook are the worm that gnaws at the tap root of trade and destroys commercial confidence. To become angry and abusive on being gently reminded of a debt, to onr mind, is viperous and recalls tlu fable of the farmer and the viper, the renewed vitality imparted by the warmth and kindness* of the bene* facto.i gives the opportunity to j wound the feelings as well as hurt the finances of the friend in need.
