I'lt'tfliull U) ,1:4*' ? ?? ffioeY A umjority of c.iuuui.iie* tviit uuhwor this ques lion by telling you that the country is going to the bow wows, and if thoy are not elected io lake the place of those al ready in" office, she will go there ?ure. Those already in office, ii in ? desiring re election, point to their record of service, their service to the pariy, and pre li?-t a similar bow wow business j 'i case they are not retained iu Iheir incumbency. The actual fact of the situn tiou iu this matter of running, or standiug for office, resolves itself into this, ? in ninety-uine per cent, of the whole, it is u struggle for self aggrandise ineut, or personal interest in n financial way. Who will dispute ? his proposition? The poiut be ing conceded then, what should the votor (the man behind the gun) do? He should vote to put in office, not the loud talker, not the big promiser, not the meu of magnificent presence especially, but the men who, through long acquaintance, or, those who come under the term of good report, you lenow to be worthy of your nupport as candidates who will conserve your interests, perhaps to the exclusion of their own. Those of this class of candi dates only -/are wort hy of elec tion to auy office to which they aspire, however humble that office may be, and those who aspire to office merely as a step ping-stona to something higher, to the exclusion of your interests If necessary to them iu their Vace for preferment, should meet a meritod rebulco at your hand* at the polls. Iii the light of fast ripening events, no reasoning voter can Ignore the evident fact that Minister influences are at \vorl< which, if not speedily estopped, will reduce us again to the con dition of tax slavery which pre vailed before our Stule was re deemed from the damning in fluence* that prevailed after the conclusion of peace to 1876. The tax upon the property owner of today is abnormally higher than prevailed ten years ago, and why? It is uct be cause our tax paying population Juts decreased, nor that property /alues are lower. Far from it. We have today a larger, and ?i *re substantial class of tux i>,i>?rs than our proud old Slate has ever possessed. Property, within the last uecade has ad vanced by leaps and founds, it being assessed more than $50, 000,000 higher than it was at the bngiiiuing of the decade. This oeing the case, wo must looic deeper for the cause. It is e.is'ly found, and consists in the fact that wo have daily grown ; more extravageut along all lines, aiid especially along the line of legislation. The average logis la tor follo'ws his leader, and un fortunately, a majority of these leaders have too large ideas in respect to appropriations to pome down to the sordid level of necessity. That this condition inust bo remedied speedily, and appropriations reduced to n normal basis goes without say ing. To be able to strut around and talk big about what South Carolina is doing In the wuy of progress, when at least one. third of this progress is accom plwbtd on credit* Is ibootis dishonest as for am Individual to talk bijc about what he owns, and never pays bis debts. riie remedy theo, as we see it, *s lor our people to lay aside the bin head, and to learn to adapt the in selves to actually cxistiug cir cumstances, all office-holders bearing this necessity ever, and especially In mind.
