Murphy,, this city, on the early morning of Friday, the 13th inst Eloe Touch berry, one of the oldest, and most highly re spected colored citizeus of the city und county. Uncle Eloe had beeu suffering gradual de cay for a number of months from old age, so the end was not un expected, although the news of his death came as a shock to his numerous friends, both white and colored in the community. New Gold Mine. We are informed that Alder man B. A. Bowen, and Messrs. J. M. Thornton and Ess Bailey, promiuet citizens of the new municipality of Blaney, were in the city on Saturday. Government Demonstrative Farms Special: We are informed that the Uuited States Department of Agriculture will in the near fu ture install several farms in this count}', the object being to demonstrate to our farmers the best methods of preparation and tillage of the soil as shown at tho experiment stations through out the Southern States during last decade. These demonstra tions will be under the super vision of Dr. D. L. DeSaussure, Special Agent who has selected tho following named farmers to conduct thoso demonstrative farms this year: In tho Eastern section, Messrs. C. N. Hum phries and A. M. McCassuill. South; Samuel Boy lun and on the West, M. B. Rabon. The crops to be grown this year will be principally coru and cotton, but the scope of opera tions will bo materally increased and enlarged after this aud suc ceeding yearn, and the number of these farms largely increased from year to year. The Agri cultural Department will furnish selected seed, and full instruc tions which must be followed to the letter by those conducting the farms. The special agent is required to visit each farm at least once a month. It is needless for us to enlarge upon the benefits that must ac crue to the far.ning class from the inauguration of this beniti cent actiou by the Agricultural Department. It marks a new era in farming in the 8outh. Instead of the haphazerd me thods that have been in vogue for centuries, we will within a few yenrs have a class of agri culturists second to none in any farming community or section. Syeed tho work.
