He Ua native of Korshaw ooantv bat now bail* from Charlotte, N. C. ? Mr. P. Epstin, tbe popular bargain couuter man, who lias b*?n absent a few days, has re turned to ns. He is clever, and certainly lias bargains iu bis jpeverui lines. ? Mr. W. J. Young, another Youug friend of ours, has re moved from the Kalb section to pastures uew uear Dulnle. Jo, is alright and will doubtless make good in his new surround iugs We regret exceedingly to learu that our friend, Mr. C. Stokes lias been ill for more than two weeks with Grippe and threatened pneumonia. He is nt the home of bis sou, Mr. E G. Stokes of our city. ? It was with a considerable degree of pleasure that we met on Wednesday, the 8tji lust., at a New Year dinner, Mrs. Jas. H. McLeod, a valued cousiu. The meeting whs at the hospitable board of our brother in-law, Maj. C. C. Vaughan. - ? Mr. P. G. Clark of Waco, Texas, spent a day or so with iir last weeic. After he had dis covered the whereabouts of THE PEOPLE, he madeonr place his headquarters, which was just to our uotion, as he Is jovial and pleasant, and willing to work. ? We had a very pleasant call ou Tuesday last from Mr. Juo. W. Davis of Djuglass, G i. He is enrolled un let* the buuuer of THE PEOPLE, so it is needless to say that he will enjoy health, wealth, happiness and security of life during the ensuing twelve months. ? Mi*. Barney Young, a valued young friend of ours as well as relative, has rotnoveu from the Kalo section to Borden, S. C., where THE PEOPLE will fol low hi in. Neither Harne.v or hi* wife coule experience any de gree of real happiness without the weekly visits of our paper. -Mr. Uobert Kuhn of Cinciu nat.i, Ohio, wasanoiher welcome visitant to THE PEOPLE last week. Like Mr. Clarlr, he was pleasant, and williug to work, and wo put him at it. We ex pect him back about our next mailing day, so if your paper is more legibly addressed than usual, give him the credit for it. Mr, C. W, Hiuson has left our emplov to taue a position at a higher salary at Williston, S. C. Our place is a training school, from which all our employes matriculate, into something big ger. In fact this office reminds us strongly of our Camden Baptist church' Let the Baptists here get a preacher and it isn't long before ho gets a call to a better* priced church. ? Relying upon the accuracy of the report of The State's cor respondent, we stated last week that Rear Admiral Bowles, wife, son and daughter were guests at Bloomsbury Hall. As a matter of facr, they are guests of our friend and brother, Mr Henry Savage and wife, the Admiral being a brother in law of Mr. Savage. Naturally, we can't bo expected to know persomtlly all these big people, being only a country editor, with a debit on his bank account, so we hope to stand excused l-eclnrc on TuhorciiloMiM. We cannot say that we wore particularly impressed by the lecture by Prof. Dawson on Tups day night, the 14th lust. In the lirst place, it was read, which detracted from its force, if there was any forco in it; and in the second, we looked upon the whole production as a mass of platitudes, without rhyme or reason to the average hearer. We dislike exceedingly to make comments of this character on any public address, but with all respect to the orator of the oc casion, wo feel free to say that not a single sentence to whicn he gave utterance con I voyed an iota of sense or mean ing to his auditors, -in fact we have our doubts whether the , brethren of the medical profes 1 sion imbibed any knowledge from j the lecture. These lectures are ! alright, but to make them of ser vice to the general public they must be made to conform to isting conditions, and not to deul with theoriticul questions, ulTecting only the medical fra ternity. We want to ask as a special favor that our patrons for job work look over their stock a number of days before they tieed tl.e work thoy want to give us. It is a matter of prid i to us to deliver all work promptly, and to accomplish it, we must have the job in time. ? Kindly, People, send in to us all the news you can gather. As it is impossible for us to scour the country for it per sonally, not having an autoino bile, air ship or wings, we have lo depend on our friends largely for what news we publish. A movement is on foot looking to the opening of the VVateree river to freight traffic, aud a meeting has been arranged, to be held at the Opera House of this citj on Friday, the 17th, inst. The meetingls called for 4 o'clock p. in. Every patriotic citizen is expected to be present. The occasion is of vital importance to our people and it is expected to be addressed by the following named gentlemen: " Hon. L. B. Dozier, Cupt. E. R. Stuart, U S. S. A, Gov. M. F. Ansel, Hon. John A. Fox and Mr. E. J. Watson, our immigra tion commisioner. The occasion will be interesting, and we hope that all who can make it con veniant, will attend. Masonic Monthly Meeting niul * llnnquct.. Tlie meeting of our local Ma sonic lodge on Tuesday night, the 7lh inst. , was very pleasant indeed. The attendance was un usually large, and everyone seemed to be imbued with the true spirit of fraternity and good fellowship that is inculcated by the tenets of Free Masonry. After the regulur work of the lodge was concluded, the broth ren of the craft repaired to the spacious dining hall udjoiuing the lodge room and indulged in the pleasures of a banquet that would have delighted any epi cure. The banquet was pre pared under the supervision of our distinguished brother, Mr. W. M. Young, and was complete in every detail. v The cravings of the inner brother being satisfied, speech making became the order of the night. As a pleasant prelude to the oratorical part of the pro gram, Toast master C. H. Yates, the Worshipful Muster of the lodge, introduced Bro. B. B. Clarke for a presentation speech. Brother Clarke, in a short but beautiful address', delivered to the retiring Worshipful Master, Dr. P. Leslie Zeinp, a handsome gold watch as a slight token of tne esteem in which he is held by Kershaw Lodge No. 29, A. F. M., partly as a personal tribute- to the man, and largely in com memoration of his faithful dis charge of the onerous duties of Worshipful Muster, covering a period of fifteen years. Bro. Clarke was followed by Fast Master UatTuey of GafTney, who entertained the brethren with a magnificent address. Ho was followed by Brothers Dr. J. P. Gray, Muj. S. It. Adams, Lieut. L. T. Mills, Senator W. R Hough, the Worshipful Master C. II. Yut"s, Henry Savage (who covered himself with glory) and THE PEOPLE. We had almost forgotten to note that the response of Bro. F. Leslie Zeinp to the presentation speech by Bro. Clarke was a gem. We naturally knew our friend and brother wim full of good qualities, but our disctf^ery on this occasion that he is nn orator, almost look our breath. Onil.xftloti In Sciilionril Hclicduln.
