^3 A MERCHANTS NEWSPAPER, f COUNTRYMAN'S NEWSPAPER. ! A NEWjtPAPER FOR SELLER AND BUYER. r f. ?-? ^ N V fUBLlSUED feVRRY THURSDAY* / 1 t ? W. A SCHKOCK, publisher. tUBSCRIPTlO^ $1.50 PER AKIQ1. Camden. 8. C.. Jan lOUi 1008. ? Roosevelt says ho won't uud he'll be banged if ho will be a /candidate. The mills of the Gods griud slowly, but exccediug| small. We'll see. ? ? ? ? Bryan says that he don't .want the nomination. He don't | have to. It looks to us just now as if he has a walk over for it. .With Roosevelt out of the way, we believe that Mr. Bryan has more than a fighting chance. ? ? ? ? Tuft had a big send off iu his candidacy for President. In New York the other night where he spoke before some club or j other. He has been globe trot ting for the past few months, presumedly picking up dots as to how to conduct war. The ma jority of us know that he is Roosevelt*3 secretary of war, and is the President's favorite for the position, Rut, he is supposed to want to vacate. We want to predict right hero that Taft will not even smell the nomination, and even if nomina ted, wont come within a mile of election. STATE TAXES. We note that Governor Ansel recommends an iucrensed tax levy of 2 or mills. This proposition does not appeal to us. What is more ueeded is & sweeping reduction of appropri ations. For a number of years the General Assembly has been spending money largely iu ex cess of the quantity of water that is imbibed by its members during' the sessions. At lenst that is the way it looks to us. In the preseut state of financial stringency, which is effecting every lino sf business, wo can not stand any largo increase of taxation. Eveu>if our several in stitutions of learning, and other State institutions see hard times for a period, we can see no ex cuse for an iucrensed levy. We must all suffer together. Proba bly, with a change for the bet ter financially, which will cer tainly como, we may look favora upon the increased levy recom tneuded by the Governor. MEETING OP THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY. Stealing a remark from one of our Georgia contemporaries, we may say that young mules will lie scarce in South Carolina dur ing the uext two yoars. The General Assembly of our State is in session, and, while from past experienca with its august bodies, we look dubiously upon the work that may bo accom plished during the present ses sion, wo hope the personel of ftae present Assembly will not come so nearly lo the resem blance of formor Assemblies lo the animal which we mentioned In a former issue as a speaker from your heart. There are great issues com. fronting the representatives of the peoplo now met and sitting |n General Assembly. None of Ihetn should bo handled iu a partisan spirit, or, with an eye to future political advancement. As tho session progresses, we hope to call attention lo indi vidual measures that may be in. troduced. - A FOOL LAW. There is some kind of a fool law that has been, or will be in iroduced In the National house of Representatives which makes | liX. i Qf any lubHorih^ Hon than ikiM month#, ?|A 10 uipoce tte imm penalty aprm m; subseri ber who uMjr be la arrears for a looker period. This proposed law will not pass. It is the quintessence of nonsense. The fellow who introduced it, or, who msy introduce it msy well be compared to that animal who is depictured under the head of auother editorial in this issue. In other words, ho out Balsms, Bulum. A little nonsefise is relished by the best of men but too much of it palls upon the appetite. Supervisor's Monthly 'Report. C. WEST, Supervisor Kershaw County. Valuable Information. We tick now lodge with thanks the receipt of a pamphlet on ??The Cotton Mills of South Curo linn," compiled by Mr. August Kohn, which is very interesting. It indicates a maitelous growth in this industry. Our space does not permit of extended notice of this pamphlet in this issue. We also note the receipt of a bulletin from the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture (Forest Ser vice) which deals with "The Lumber Cut of the United States; 1900. Both of these pamph lets and publications are well worth reading, and we commend them to the consideration of our subscribers and others who may rend this local.
