It is u mat *?< 'ter that will overshadow till fP . . ^ other questions thut will como up for settlement at the next V ? session of the General Assembly I. of South Carolina. If.it is not! settled by that body, it mu*t be # settled by the legislative body | that will be elected next fall. r a This, every right minded citizen ?*, will concede, so, while we do not expect any action by our present 'legislature along the liifo ofi p.tssinir a compulsory education Sp the people, the great body of the people, uot a single class, not two classes, uor a dozen classes should prevail in op Jjr' position to the passage of a proper measure along that line. What constitutes a true legis lator? Would you reader con sider any raau who subordinates his actual convictions 011 this Subject, to the idea that if he took an opposite stand to that of a certain crowd of voters he would lose out in the election, a proper legislator? Would you, as an integer, or, to speak more plainly, a prime factor in the in telligent progression of your race along all the lines of human pro V- g ress, vote for any man for a legislative, or any other office who would deliberately vote, or throw his inlluence against any reasonable plan that would in sure your children, or your children's children in a life of servitude, or condemn them for ever to a existence of illiteracy, and it may ne, crime, ? FOK IL LITERACY BEGETS CRIME, loose morals, and a lower order ot the human species? We do not have to look far for the auswer. We know now, ami expect to tell you upon the hus tings uext year what the others of you, men of family and men of uo family, but who neverthe less are men of moderate or am ple means, expect to do. You and they earnestly hope to elect to our legislature men who will earnestly urge the passage of a rational COMPULSORY EDU CATION LAW. 9 Liberty Bell Facts.
