Would you reader con sider any raau who subordinates his actual convictions 011 this Subject, to the idea that if he took an opposite stand to that of a certain crowd of voters he would lose out in the election, a proper legislator? Would you, as an integer, or, to speak more plainly, a prime factor in the in telligent progression of your race along all the lines of human pro V- g ress, vote for any man for a legislative, or any other office who would deliberately vote, or throw his inlluence against any reasonable plan that would in sure your children, or your children's children in a life of servitude, or condemn them for ever to a existence of illiteracy, and it may ne, crime, ? FOK IL LITERACY BEGETS CRIME, loose morals, and a lower order ot the human species? We do not have to look far for the auswer. We know now, ami expect to tell you upon the hus tings uext year what the others of you, men of family and men of uo family, but who neverthe less are men of moderate or am ple means, expect to do. You and they earnestly hope to elect to our legislature men who will earnestly urge the passage of a rational COMPULSORY EDU CATION LAW. 9 Liberty Bell Facts. October 24th, 1781, it rang out for the surrender of Corn wall is. April 10th, 178!}, it announced the proclamation of peace. Sept. 2Uth, 1821. it assisted in the weicome of LaFayette to the Hall of Independence. July 20th, 1820, it ushered in the year of Jubilee, the OOtli an niversary of the republic. July 24th, 1820, it tolled for the death of Tlios. Jefferson. July 4th, 1831, is the last re- j -corded ringing of the bell to J ^commemorate the day of hide petitionee. Feb. 22nd, 1K12, is its last re corded ringing or tolling to com morato the death oT Washing- ! ton. In the same year it tolled ( the death of the lasi survivor of the Declarat ion of I adepeiidence, Charles Carrol . July 2lst, 18:54. it tolled once more, LaFuyotte was dead. July 8th, 18J{.">, while it was being tolled for tin* death of Chief Justice John Marshall, a cracU was discovered starting from the rim and incliuinv it a right hand direction towards the irown. Another attempt was made to ring it on Washington's birth day, February 22nd, 1*18, but Ibc fracture was so much in t Ixi t no attempt was ever made to ring it.
