FRIDAY, Feb 12. 1909. The cock and bull fights that figured so conspicuously in the celebration of Cuban Independence do nol inspire much hope for a stable government and prosperous future. Congress seems to have the art o doiug nothing pretty fully develop ed. So far this session it has dont little but mark time, but it is safe tc say the members will have no scrup les against drawing their salaries. We find in others that for whic we setk. If we look for the bad w find it, and if we look for the goo< we find that also. To seek the firs leads to suspicion, distrust aud cyr icism; to seek the other is far noble and promotes charity, friendshi] and goodness. It is an easy but inexcusible thinj to run down the place in which on lives. No talent is required to do il All that is necessary is to persis bvuki/ iaiiv uuuUL 11^ buoficoniingj t \- n?. The State has had indefinite re ports about counties being victim ized by bridge builders, and some o; the statements have come so straighi that there must be something c rooked. In Lexington it is aileged tha officials are implicated, but our in formation regarding the methods o procedure in other counties inclica ted that the county officials wen the innocent victims of a combine of representatives of bridge builders It is alleged that certain territory is allotted to a certain concern, anc that while a number bid on the work in that territory, the represen tative of the company to whem the territory belongs is allowed to make the lowest bid?at a tremendous advance above the real value. In thai way the business is divided, with very large profits on every contract. If the representative of a ct ncern outside the combine "outts in" and proposes making a legitimate bid, he is bought off, or warned that if he persists the combine will see that he gets no business elsewhere. Some time ago. when the letting of a big bridge contract was advertised. The State armed a detective reporter with plans, intending to get at the inside of the hold-up game if it existed, but the opening of bids was indefinitely postponed. While the investigation is being Conducted in Lexington, it would be well for county officials elsewhere to provide proper safeguards through the employment of honest experts. And where counties have awarded large contracts, and all the money is In sickness, if a certain hidden nerve goes wrong, then the organ that this nerve controls will also I . surely fail. It may be a Stomach j nerve, or it may have given strength ( and support to the Heart or Kid- ] neys. It was Dr. Shoop that first , pointed to this vital truth. Dr. j Shoop's Restorative was not made ( j to dose the Stomach nor to tempos rarily stimulate the Heart or Kidi. neys. That old fashioned method is all wrong. Dr. Shoop's Restorative goes directly to these failing , inside nerves. The remarkable success of this prescription demonstrates the wisdom of treating the ac" tual cause of these failing organs. And it is indeed easy to prove. A s simple five or ten clays test will sureb ly tell, l'ry it once and see! Sold by Gunter's Lrug Store.
