S. R. Hope A most interesting and instructive service was held at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning, the occasion being the installation of the pastor. Rev. S. R. Hope, by officers specially appointed by the Presbytery to con duct these S'Tvicos. The sermon was preached by Rev. S. C. Caldwell, former pastor of this church. Among the. candidates announcing (or public office in this county, none has perhaps created more surprise nnd comment than that of Rev. It. H. Ulmer, who last week announced himself as a candidate for the office of county highway eommiaaioimr. Mr. Ulmer Is not unknown to the People of the county, having been born and reared in this county near Bells X Roads. He is a son of the late LeGrand Ulmer, who was for many years magistrate of Bells township. Upon the death of his father. Mr. Ulmer was appointed to fill out the unexpired term of Ms father, which he'djd to the satisfac tion of the people of the township. Bells township, being the first to hold this office after its creation by the legislature. Tnls he.held one term of two years, and then became a member of the S. C. Conference and did -two year’s work for the Methodist church, serving charges at- Yonges Island and at Rock Hill. On account of the stringency of the times so many suprenumerary min isters were forced back into the ser vice that a number of the young ministers had to be laid off, and since then Mr. Ulmer has not been given a charge, but it was through no fault the Conference found with him. He Is an experienced road build er and has Just completed a contract for constructing a long section of the Seaboard’s new road from Char leston to Savannah, being in charge \0f the force of hands engaged in this Work. At a late hour last night Murray wds still in a semi-conscious (hjndition and the extent of his injuries had not h*>on determibed. It was not thought, howevi r, that they would prove fa tal. The cars, bearing the children, were proceeding slowly out Kollock Street and had reached a point near Hopkins when someone shouted that one of the lads had fallen from the car. The car was Immediately stop ped and the crushed body of the un fortunate little fellow was taken from the tracks. It was learned that he had fallen between the motor car and the trailer and had been run over by Ihe latter. The body was taken to the undertaking establish ment of R. E. Elliott, where an In quest will be held this morning. Mr. S. A. Cole, motqrtnan of car 47, stated that both cars were filled with children and K was a continu ous job on the part of the car crew to keep them from being hurt. The children, he stated, w-ere jumping on and oft the car from the time they left the lake. It was not until the car had nearly reached Hopkins Street on Kollock that Mr. Cole was aware of the fact that a child had fallen. ’ He stated that the children were making so much noise that It was impossible to hear and ercog- nize a signal. As soon as he reali zed someone was hurt he stopped the car and immediately phoned the Uni versity Hospital for assistance. Mr. S. E. Evans, the conductor on the picnic car, also stated that he was constantly on the alert to pre vent accidents. Fie said that the car was proceeding slowly out Kollock Street in the vicinity of Hopkin* when someone shouted to stop that a child was hurt. Neither Mr. Evans nor Mr. Cole witnessed the accident. Mr. Evans stated that he knew noth ing of the accidnt to the other lad until the ambulance arrived. The mother of the two boys is herself critically ill at the Univer sity Hospital and has not been in formed of the tragedy. Mr. and Mrs. Lane reside in Greggtown in the W(est End of the city and have the sympathy of their many friends in their terrible bereavement.
