Fire Hill School Improvement As** Noriatioa Holds First Meeting. / The excitement caused by the an- nocmtmeni several months ago of the cnasfe condition of the roof of the Walterboro School house should now be quieted, for at present the roof is resting on four steel columns auJaciently strong to support a rail road train. Mr. W. A. Stewart, th econtractor. finished his work this week and the auditorium has been open for inspet- tion for tornetime. In order that no fear ncr be felt b> person.i going into the auditorium we will describe fn details the method of support which has been afforded. For a foun dation for the columns, four of which are placed «under the roof beams, a cement base beneath the grund was constructed, and upon this a brick pier erected. The brick pier is four fret'square at base and 2S inches at In ell of 'his Port- '9ml Cement was used, ajtd there is ho doubt as to the sutlieiencV of the base. When money was beuing raised fr this work, Mr. Black took the lead, and raised over $400. The school bore the remainder of the expense. Wichman 10.00 The Association for the improve ment of Fire Hill Public School held its first meeting February 27th. The association was called to order bv the president, and the roll^all and minutes read by the secretary. We then had a lecture by Miss Georgia Ackerman, who mapped out much necessary work to be perform ed 1 nour association. She made many-suggestions which if followed, I am sure will prove very beneficial. The president suggested that a cot ton patch be planted and the results to be Used for extending the school term. This suggestion made such an impression that it- was taken up by the association and unanimously voted upon. Two acres of land was given by Mr. J. C. Kinard. one sack of kanit salt by Mr. W. A. Crosby, one sa. k of High Grade b'- Messrs. J. A. and I.. A. Hudson, one sack by Mcs^ro J. M. .and J. P. Kinard and others will be expected to furnish balan«e of fertilizer, cotton seed. c»e.
