C. Heyward: 1 have read with a great deal of Intenest the editorials, the various letters from ettisens genera-lly. and more especially the communications Senator Tillman and the reply there from the Hon. John Gary Evanf. State chairmen, with reference to the recent primary’ and the proposed investigation concerNng fraud. I confess,to certain sympathy wit tbe view expressed by Senator Till man which does not seem to the to charge that the executive com mittee contemplctes "counting out anybody,” but does express grave doubt as to the wisdom of the cours adopted by the committee. 1 From the letter of the chairman as well as that of Senator Tillmc.n it is apparent that the main inter est of each is to preserve the white man’s primary in South Caro Una. livery white South Carolininn should feel the necessity of the perpetuation of the primary system under the condition* we are sub jected to. Now white supremacy in -South Carolina is dependent upon white unity. We h»|ve had differen ces which have strained that uni ty to the utmost, and in this crisis. 1 can conscientiously sny that my endeavor in exery participation in political affairs ha* been to assuage differences nnd unite our people The question for u# to consider, the Is whether the right method is be ing adopted to preserve, what ww are all sincerely interested in, the primary. With these facts clearly ir- vi**w what today is the position of the State executive committee? Is Its position the right one? The commit tee, r-s I understand, is undertaking through sub-committees of its own body to "probe” for fraud. Is it investigating certain specific charges of fraud, or is it seeking to have th*> rr-rious counth-s show th?t they were free of fraud?
