The meeting was called to or der at 11 o'clock by Ch".irman W B. Gruber, of the Walterboro board of trustee#, who introduced Rev. J R. Funderburk to open the mee*ing with prayer. In welcoming those present. Mr. Gruber made a very forcefuf aM pertinent address to the teachers r.nd trustees. His ad- dreM was full of helpful suggestions and outlined the policy of th: form ers of the constitution in provid ing for the educational interest* of the State. He deplored the fact that the legislature hM not lived up to the requirements of th'wsgtats terms of at leaj<t five months. He cocotltutlon in providing for school felt that the constitutions! three- mill tax should be more equitably dispersed throughout the state; that the br<«ls of enrollment was not the proper basis on which to disperse this fund, but that It should be done according to tax able property. He wanted to see every child lr* the State have rn equal opportunity to obtain an ed ucation and this )s not possible where the funds are sufficient to run one school two nor-b* and another all th# year. He urged the rural schcol supervisor ••'d th teachers and trustees to talk this until It had been accomplished. Mr. Gruber then introduced J M. Moorer. Mr. Moorer took occasion to com mend the county board of edu^itior for employing a county rurat gehoo’ supervisor. Mr. Moorer wa® followed hy W. "W. Smoak. a member of the county hor-d of educatirn. who spoke of some of the needs in Colleton coun ty educationally. He felt that a great deal of the responsibility for the pr^ser** condition of th* sef ool? In this county could be traced to the trustee*; that they r-lloscd .too many schools to be formed in their district* and had Invited troubles; when they refused to handle the educational system by themselves without calling in aid of the pa- outcome of th» contest, it became noised abroad that bo’h sides were preparing numerous affidavit* r’leglng vote buying on both aides. Consequently much Interest was shown In the outcome and a stormy session was predated for Monday vShen these charges would be con sidered. , It was with r. feeling of relief that the knowledge *hat Sh o rl f f Fox has Withdrawn his notes* charges be-ame known. Sheriff Fox was not very much in favor of the contest from the beginning but he was urged to take this step by hi* frler-Jg, who claimed to' be in possession of Informction which would throw out a great many vote*. Sheriff Fox, however, rr.‘her ‘han continue .the fight, and thus bring about more bitter feeling In the party in this county, decided to withdraw his cor-'est and has hand ed In for publication the following C-rd: Card from Sheriff Fox To the Democratic Voterrs of Colle ton County.
