Senator Tiflma^ speaking at a meeting at the Clemson College Coast Experiment station, near Sum* merville, S C., last Saturday, said: 'j How many acres there are in this section undeveloped 1 do not know.' I heard yesterday that it was two mllliona. We have sort of dead mkn's country, here between the up-country and the low-country, and It is no man’s land except Mister Nigger and the terrapins and the crawfish. 1 have had a little observation in Europe and I know from reading that Holland Is a much wetter country than this. The have the rivers above the land they are cultivating. But they have dik ed the rivers and they have put the wind to work to draining and they make enormous crops. We have here a problem which should enlist the active support of South Carolina—they call It , the low country*—may be surprising; 1 ut it’s true. There are mllliona and millions of acres of absolutely wasted le-cds over there—worthless in Its present state, still lands that could be made among the most val uable in the entire state. Lends which, if properly drained and clear ed, would yield by the nature of the soil as almoa^ no other'will; even i superior, as a matter of fact, to those lends of Holland to which the Senator makes referer^e where the thrifty*, enterprising Dutch c profitably tilling the soil below the level of the rivers and mak ing the God-given free breeies and nuMi-built dikes keep the water off the crops. Whnt the Senator has drawn in the shape of a comparison between j lower South Carolina c-t<J Holland can just as well be applied to a , vast territory in the State of Geor gia and yet if the statement should be made to the people of either state that thoae Hollanders are any more progressive than we are.
