I should not like to be that person, whether man or woman, whose heart was not stirred and exhilarated by the very idea of erecting a Con federate monument here in our town. It seems, to one of any patriotic sensibility, clearly demand ed that, in every way possible, we should try to express and perpetuate our senSe of abiding obiigatian to those heroic ones who gave their lives for their, and our home-land; and as we have never, in the worst of times, been accused of lack of patriotism, what hinders it, we may ask, to make the dream true, and to place in our midst a stately shaft which shall help to keep the memo ry of the Confederate soldier green? Of course there arc obstacles in the way (when was ever any under taking perfectly clear of impedi ment ?) but surely in this building era, when prosperity seems to be finding expression in many w'ays, poverty can hardly be one. Nor, it would seem, do we lack those who might be inspired, in such a cause, with a generous enthusiasm (akin to the self-forgetful spirit of the Con federate soldier himself), and who would be fully capable of carrying' the movement forward to success. Some may say that such a monu ment lis not Jamong the necssitics |of the community; but have they ; considered how little of all that we do is absolutely necessary ? Our 1 lives would lie poor indeed if we were atwnrbed in bare necessities of — & TAYLOR’ Walterboro’s Popular Store the Confederate soldier. I confess,! should very much like to see a Chap ter of the ‘-‘United Daughters of the Confederacy” organized here; and if any lady of some leisure (it would would not require much) would in augurate such a Chapter, I feel sure that we have at least as good material as in the average town, both to build the society out of, in the matter of Confederate ancestry; and to assist in maintaining it, in the matter of resource and talent. Mrs. J. W. Dear, of Georgetown, has charge, as organizer, of the dis trict in which Walterboro hes; and it is rather surprising that so ener getic a worker as she is reputed to be. has, so far, made no effort to es tablish a Chapter here. Mrs. Har riet P. Lynch, of Cheraw, is State historian—one of the most impor tant departments of the work— which, as may be supposed, makes its greatest effort along the line of the preservation of true history. Each aspirant far membership is re quired to give as full an account as possible of the Confederate soldiery who compose her ancestors—the more of them the better—and happy is she who “hath a whole quiverful” of them, for they constitute a kind of credentials of aristocracy in the organization. Lastly I might mention Miss Mary B. Poppenheim, of Charleston, talented editor of Keystone, the official organ of women’s clubs for four or five states.
