We are authorized to state that neither Cook nor Peary has refused an invitation to be present at our County Fair, because none has been given. We have recently learned two new ways to spell “hurrah”—one, 4 ‘Huraw” and the other “Whoraw.” Like the little boy who spelled •‘locks,” "sox.” said when taken to task: “If “s-o-x” don’t spell "socks,” what do it spell?” TEACHER’S EXAMINAflON. We desire to call attention to the examination for teachers to be con ducted here Friday of this week by the countj board of education. Wp trust it will be well attended and that the holders of certificates will secure better certificates, and that many i>ersons holding no certificate will get one. It will Ik* recall**d that a resolution has recently been adopt ed by the county board to conform strictly to the terms of the law and renew no second grade certificates, • o nor pay any claim for any teacher * o whose certificate is not on tile in the office of Che county superintendent of education Trustees, of course, should not employ teachers whohave not proper credentials, but some times they do, so it will be well for trustees and teachers alike to govern themselves by the rules of the coun ty board of education, for we do not believe in this instance they differ from the laws of the Medea and Persians. suits either in the Mayor's court or before the magistrates, he will see that they are prosecuted, even if be has to remain in Charleston till court convenes in Walterboro November loth. * * Now, if Mayor Rhett really desires enforcement of the law, let him get busy and begin these cases so that the Solicitor will have something to do when he comes down to hold court. This Mayor, however, seems to have arrogated to himself the prerogatives of the legislature and the courts and makes a peculiar law in violation of law to fit what he chooses to term peculiar conditions which conditions he created by his independence of the law governing the rest of the State. Why this sud den awakening? Is it a twinge of conscience or a fear of consequences? South Carolina is really*larger than Charleston, and the Mayor need not worry about the Solicitor’s perform ing his duties if he (the Mayor) will perform his. MAKE A DEPOSIT. With cotton bringing such a splendid price, and the fanners of Colleton so fortunate as to have a good crop, there is likely to be many of them having a surplus left over after they pay all their indebtedness. In truth each year more and more of our farmers are learning the 1 0 meaning of the word, independence, and we are glad of it. Now, our advice to such as have n money left over is to begin a bank account. If one keeps money in his pocket, it is likely to go and he will never know how it goes, so, young man, if you have only ten dollars in your pocket, go to one of our banks and start a bank account. To have money in a bank will give one a feel ing of independence nothing else can give. Do not think that be cause you have only five or ten dol lars to start an account the cashier w«l not want your deposit. Any cashier will gladly welcome you as a depositor if you have but a dollar. Our advice to you. voung man, especially, is begin to save by mak ing a deposit. MAYOR RHETT AND THE SOLICI TOR. Mayor Rhett of Charleston has written a letter to Solicitory Peuri- foy in which he claims to be very much in earnest in a deaire to rid Chartatton of her numerous blind tiger*.
