Allendale Feb. 24.—Work on the town acetylene light plant is progressing well, it is being in stalled by the Consumers’Acety lene Gas Company, a local orga nizatiou, of which J. L. Oswald is president; J. H . Warren, vice president; L. Wilson, Jr., secre tary; C.' H. Farmer, treasurer, and Otis Brabham, manager, Mr. Btabham has also the con tract for the installation. The company has been charter ed, the capital stock being $2,700, with the privilege of increasing to $3,500. The company wan granted a 20-year franchise by the town council and has a con tract with that body for lighting the streets for five years. There will be three miles of gas mains and 40 street liglitt;— five of them arc lights—will dis sipate the present darkness. Ihe two hotels, town hall, some of the churches, most of the stores and many residences will be illuminated by the new light. A concrete block house has beeu built foi the generators, and when the work is completed Allendale will have the best equipped light plant of this kind in the State. DEATH OF JACK WILSON The entire community was shocked when on the 301 of Jan. news" was sent to the Inends of Jack Wilson that he was dying. Many went to him with the hopes of finding him better bpt it was too late. He had been sick for three weeks with rheumatism but no one was expecting death so soon but God, who doeth all things well, saw fit to take him out of this world of trouble and pain. Dear Mr. Editor:—I thought I would just give you a sketch of my thoughts on whiskey. 1 agree with that girl who wrote a few words about it for it is one of the most disgraceful acts of ones life to take it, and there are so many who acquire this awful habit. Just think of the many nice young men who are pulled down to Uieir ever lasting ruin by the terrible poisonous effects of it, and think of the many homes of women and children who are suffering from the awful habit of whiskey. Young men and old ones too just think of it, think how disgraceful it looks to see anyone staggering about in the streets and running poor horses up and down the road, and staggering in the church doors. Islamlton, Feb. 27, Special:— Really, Mr Editor, you should be with us and enjoy our parties and attend the marriages. 1 never heard of so mauy girls and boys chaugiug their present state of “single blessedness,” for such I shall call it, as I was not all successful during Leap Year. Gness most folks would call that “tough luck” and walk on. First, there was a real nice pound party at Mr Frank Polk’a Feb. 12th. It was, as always, a very pleasant evening for all. Again, one 1 must not fail to mention was at Willie Carter’s, Feb. 13th, Saturday night. This was given in honor of their guests, Mr and Mrs, Box, of Hamplon, Miss Garris of Wil liams and Mr Baker of Scofield. We had some very nice music rendered by Miss Jessie Carter, afterwards played games until twelve winch everyone seemed to enjoy. Herbert Carter and sister were the guests of Misses Carter this week . We know that they had an enjoyable time for it is im possible for anyone to go there and not feel at home at once. All the schools arc beginning to close, and we are looking for ward to some nice exercises from all. We can say that we will certainly miss the teachers.
