It *6c is certain that no more worthy pur poses could be in view than > those expressed. The building of a modern school is one of the greatest needs we have now in Walterboro, from a business view-point as well as from the educational. The completing of ; the waterworks system is also a business and economic necessity. Wanted—A good, live correspond ent from Cottageville who will send a newsy letter every week. New school building and water works will increase property values at least fifty per cent in town—have you signed the petition? More and more does the value of an ideal grow upon me, Give a man bread and he will hunger again, give him clothes and his clothes will wear out. but give him an ideal and that! ideal will be w ith him through every waking hour, lifting him to a higher plane in life and giving him a broad er conception of his relation to his fellows. W J Bryan. * 1 We deisre to call special attention to the articles from Snider’s school in this issue and from Miss Carrie E. Weekley. It will Ik* seen that the men and boys of that community instead of roving thv woods with gun and dog on Thanksgiving day, met at the school house with white wash brushes, saw hammer etc. At the conclusion of their labors they had something for which to be thankful, as did the birds and beasts of the wood. What an object lesson to Colleton county! A WOMAN’S BACK. many There are two things about that Thanksgiving day and dinner at Sniders school we wish to call to thfc attention of our readers. One is the influence of a capable, energetic teacher, such as Miss Weekley hag proven herself to be—the patrons of the schools where she teaches always want her for another term; the other is: ‘ Thanksgiving service wa« con ducted by Hen W C Brant.” Here is a man who has never had a child to send to school and yet so great is his interest in the education of hit neighbor’s child that he never allows an opportunity to jmm for doing something for the upbuilding of the Snider’s school. Would that more ef this uneeifishness were felt in the schools of the county. COTTON FOOLS! The Yorkville, S C. Enquirer sub mits that with lard selling at 12 cents wholesale, riba 11 3>4 cento, fat back at 10 cento and flour at $5.40 a bar rel, how the cotton producer is going to make both ends meqt with 9 cent cotton is a puzzling proposition. It is, indeed, for the cotton producer who has allowed himself to become a fool on the subject of cotton, but he who has headed the of times weari some but always sound advice con cerning "hog and hominy” and such matters, can view the situation with entire serenity.-Edgefield Chronicle. THAT NEW SCHOOL BUILDING. Information reaches us that a petition is being circulated and nu- BMrously signed asking for an elec tion to order a bond issue of 25,000. foe the purpoae of erecting amodern building, completing the The Aches and Pains Will Disap pear if the Advice of This W alterboro Citizen is Followed. Remember the name—Doan’s —and sake no other. reduce insurance rates- The present system does not conform to the con ditions of the Association of insur ance companies, and will not, there fore, reduce insurance- According to these conditions it is necessary that the town have a tank or reser voir that will hold 100,000 gallons of water, and an organized fire depart ment. To comply with these condi tions will necessitate the erection of a 70,000 gallon tank or reservoir, the extension of the large water mains and the organization of afire depart ment. To get these things will re quire the expenditure of more money than the waterworks com mittee has on hand or can secure. It is therefore, very opportune that this movement is on and we trust those promoting it will have no trouble in securing the requisite number of signatures. Another thing which should com mend this petition to the business men of the town is that it carries a provision that the license on busi- peases be repealed after 1909, the objects of such license being met by | this bond issue. The necessity for a prompt completion of this matter is easily seen, and we trust freehold ers will think before the petition is presented and be ready to sign.
