Prr?? 1 XCIU'Ivm|I '? < io thf for rrpuMirition of hp < s*h??? to If or not '* 1 1 ;n ihl* n .? THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12. 1922. With the srhools of the sta'e f- " u> overnowing, me xuture satcty the state is assured. Ignorance is twin sister to vice. It is the mother of law breakers and the eneirn* of progress. "Hie long editorial is a fine spa-'e filler, and niav be very learned, b it the trouble about it is nobody rea Is it. The Ion? sermon may be learne 1 it may b* logical and it may l>e preached to a full house, but the trouble is nobody hears it. The long-wm.led conversationalist may be talkiki " fiuently rnd intelligently. The tro ible about it is nobody pays attention to him. It is not so much a matter of how long you li/e, but how well. Yet it is true that a worthy life, reachii.g out into the years, brings Torth rbh fruit more abundantly. A man who works and plans out of a heart th at is unselfish, seeking to build up. cannot live too long. He is worth muih to a community. Yet, sucti a man would be toe last to discover this. It is one of the charms of a beautiful life that it is nncnnsriniio r?f i"fo kom. ty. A gentleman was heard to expre's doubt as to whether the bond issue for street improvements would carry a second time. His fears are groundless, for the issue will carry. If it does not it would be disgraceful. And the expense already incurred, thousands of dollars, would have to be paid by the city just the same. Union would be the laughing stock of all t -v~ her naighfttrs, and yfrould go badfc'fbr half a century. It would bury itself, rhe bontj issue will carry. It should carry this time without a dissenting vote. We may expect to see some bad streets in Union this winter. Owinir to the work of putting in sewer lines and connections, the streets have been cut up considerably. The street improvement work having been delayed the full winter will give us mud in plenty. But It cannot now be helped. The big talk of the Republican about the fat times to be brough* about through protective tariff would be laughable were it not so serious. frotective tariff enriches the few by robbing tha many. It is special prr ilege with a vengeance. Protective tariff destroys competition, creator high prices by restricting production, and the poor pay the bill. Look at the country today. The farmer's wheat is down to the bottom. Wages keep going down. Merchandise i high. Shoes are high. What the work'ng man has to sell is goin"down. What he has to buy is goiirr up A fine thing/is this robber doctrine, it is good doctrine, as well. Those who object to much that goe? into the newspapers usually read firs' the very articles they condemn. TV sensational is always played up. It is "live news," and unconsciously, the reader fastens his eyes upon th" "glaring headlines." And it 5s safe to ray that the reader is in no wise hurt thereby We talk a great deal of nonsense about the dangers of Contamination from reading. It seem? that we are like the rogue who sorrows, not because he is a rogue, but because he :s caught. The public ofte-> shudders because the harrowing de tails are put into cold type. There seems litt'e regret that the f ets po~ trnyed are true. The crime is o 'r looked and only the publicity give'-! it condemned. The truth is, publicity is the chief factor in bringing the criminal to justice. And, anyway, we like to rea.l the whole sordid, sen a tional, unnatural story. Human nature will have to change greatly bo fore the newspapers will be under the necessity of entering upon a new policy. As predicted, England's diplomat" have scoured a victory. Inc:dentally ? Lloyd George has done the same thing. / 1 ' There wilt, for the present at least, be no war with Turks. The Turks, n flush with victory, were not easy to oi bring to reason. France dads that she is not quite willing to disssrd-tha friendship of England. The English may be needed. English soldiers could a ro easily be withdrawn from the Rhine. Germany would then become a matter of chief concern to France, ni and furnish her all the entertainment ihe would need. Not only this, but ^ French interests in Africa and other sections of the globe might show signs of disruption. It thus appears that nation.*, whether they will it or do not w*tl it, are very much dependent tipon one another. The day of iso- n lation has passed. Even America, ti thousands of miles away, tannot live :o herself. We may say that we will so do, bu*, 110 sooner does some E^st- ^ m question arise, some war threaten, than do wo show by our words and deeds, that wc are very much inter- v ested. United States ships are thick a-ound Constantinople. Let a war . break out anywhere on the globe, and it soon appears, that no great nation :s willing to play the part of utter in- ^ difference. A war anywhere has its effect everywhere. When our country decided to drop the League of Nations, and have nothing to do with ir, we did so with little honor to ourselves, and without achieving separation from entangling alliances over . the sea. And we lost world leader- n s lip. There would have long since r< been world peace. Not a crisis has arisen since the close of the war but that we have meddled in. If we had Ci taken the leadership which had come to us, we couid have taken a hand with n more grace. Our cat says good times are on the ^ way.
