Armstrong, of New Bern, who is one of the most widely known osteopaths in the United States, has this week given out to the public a cure and preventive for malaria which bids fair to win him fame all *vcr?v? onrt nthpr countries. I WW %,XXl*3 mux* w?V- ^ Dr. Armstrong's cure and preventive for this disease, which is so prevalent in eastern North Carolina and v other parts of the United States, is simple; it is not a drug, and it requires no painstaking methods for one to get it into his system, being merely a dose of rare beefsteak once a day several times a week. Dr. Armstrong some years ago discovered that rare beefsteak was a better cure and preventive for malaria than was the much used quinine. 5y\ .. He began experimenting with it. Taking the worst case of malaria that he could find, he advised the) patient to partake of portions of rare beefsteak several times each week and to watch the result. Months ago the doctor gave to the members of the American Osteopathi ic society his wonderful. discovery. Hundreds of the members have tried b;|h it out, found it to be a success, and Dr. Armstrong has received scores jfe v W of letters praising his discovery. So highly did this society prize this ?^s.\ discovery that they have ashed Dr. glpf^v Armstrong to rn^ke at address on the |H ^subject at the 20th annual meeting ||?*- of the society to be held in Kansas City, Mo., during the coming August. Dr. Armstrong has written for the ' Journal of the American Osteopathic ; / Society the following interesting account of the discovery of the rare fe ';. beefsteak cure and his method of fe- treating cases of malaria: The Disease. This " parasite was first studied by Luvaran, jfe: < and belongs to the class of sporozoa. It is at present well established that the malarial parasite runs suvriml <?vc1a ^sDOEflsrone) within I |?fe the body of the anopheles mosquito ; - (anopheles mosculipennis). The old ||P|;^' idka that malaria was an air-borne disease, the contagion arising from v stagnant pools' in swampy regions, Ste,4:> now be replaced by the mosquito theory). . "It may be possible that sometimes ' malaria is contracted from drinking 8pv stagnant water; also from certain springs. I have in mind a spring by lfp?> drinking water from which I believe malaria is contracted by some. Igfeciy "In all cases of suspected malaria * I first make miscropic examinations of the blood, to be sure that malaria Sg||?? is present and to ascertain the ?5^ amount of infection and the variety. I very seldom have to resort to stain>> 1 ing ^nethods to make the diagnosis, since VI have become familiar with the parasites as they show in fresh blood. If it is necessary to stain the pyf speciment I use Kright's stain. I! have had every type of malaria under &my observation and treatment. / For the past 11 years I have lived in one |;.iV of the worst malaria sections of the E country; in one of the few sections where the black water of hemorrhage ' type is met with so frequently. "Owing to the different types and severity of many cases it is almost impossible to take up each case separately, as the intent of this paper is v. to make as plain as possible the genoral pathological findings and the general treatment for malaria, as all malaria, of whatever type, produces a destruction of the red blood cells and causes a pronounced anemia. In my experience with malaria, outside of the general symptoms of, enlargement .of the spleen and liver with different curves caused by the number of infections, they are all amenable to practically the same treatment. 'There are three distinct species of the parasite, causing three distinct types of malaria. First, the quartan; second, the tertian, and, third, the estivo-autumnal. The quartan parasite organism exists in the blood in great groups, all members of which are approximately at the same stage of development, and pass through .their cycle nearly in unison. The cycle lasts exactly 72 hours. Spoliation of the group of parasites, if it has reached sufficient size, is always associated with the paroxysm in the infected individual. The immediate cause of the malarial paroxysm is thought to be the liberation of some toxic substance, probably by the parasite at the time of sporulation."? (Gould & Pile Cyc. Med. and Surg.) "When I find that the patient has hp ouartan Darasite, as soon as the temperature begins to fall I give him from two to six ounces of red meat & ' \ .. * -v'. ' ' juice, extracted from rare beefsteak, 4 and if it is possible for the patient to ^ take it I sometimes give the extract ^ of as much as five pounds in the first ?> 24 hours following the chill. In al- 4 most all cases of quartan malaria the ^ blood is built up sufficiently by the J time they reach the second cycle to ^ pass without the paroxysm, or chill. ^ is the seventh day, I always have By the time for the third cycle, which ^ built up the patient's resistance by J feeding this beef extract and rare ^ steak so as to enable him to pass by < this cycle without any symptoms of malaria whatever. M v ^ ^ not give any other diet, except dry toast, if they eat the beef instead of f taking the juice. If they can take ^ the steak I prefer their taking it, but ^ almost all cases prefer the juice. "Just after the first chill the patient usually complains of being very ? hungry, and that is the best time to give them a large quantity of beef t extract. As I said before, there are ^ no special symptoms outside of the ^ impoverished blood and enlargement 4* of the liver and spleen in malaria. I give strong stimulation to the splen- ^ ic nerves. I also give saline anemias J once a day until the bowels become J active and the flow of bile is well es- V tablished. "Patients of light, ruddy complexion respond more readily to this treatment, although I find all classes ^ of patients gain very quickly under the treatment. The first 24 hours is t in the best time to crowd the diet, as ^ the taste of bile in the mouth at the ^ end of 24 hours nauseates them for the next 18 hours to such an extent ^ that it is impossible to give them very much beef extract. It is well to give J * " XT + oil ^ tnem au me water mev wam a.t em * times. * "The tertian parasite, like the * quartan, exist in the blood in great < groups. The life cycle lasts about 48 ' 4 hours, so that sporulation occurs 4 every other day. Infections with two ^ groups of organisms segmenting on successive days are common, the dis- * ease assuming a quotidian or daily ? type. The treatment for the tertian 4 type is the same as the treatment jj for the quartan. The difference in ^ the two types is so little that it is not necessary to do anything more for ^ this type than for the quartan. My 4 results of these two types have been 4, perfectly satisfactory under the pre- 4 scribed treatment. ^ "The estivo-autumnal type of ma- ! laria differs from the quartan and * tertian types: First, in that the par- 4 oxysms are as a rule much more ir- ^ regular; second, they are much long- . 4 er in duration; third, the chills are ^ more frequently absent; fourth, the j fever is often of irregular, intermit- ^ tent type, very often taking the form of black water or hemoglobinuria type with hemorrhage symptoms, 4 wfth hemorrhage from nose, gums < and bowels. The first thing to do in a case of hemorrhagic malaria is to put an ice bag on the abdomen, 4 which will tend to control the hem or- i rhage from the kidneys. Give the < patient all the red beef juice you can 4 get him to take, provided he has not ^ developed a very sick stomach from regurgitating bile; if so give him 4 high saline anemias and in one-half 4 hour give him0 four ounces red beef < juice per rectum. It is well to re- 4 peat the feeding per rectum in four < hours. As soon as he can retain anything on stomach, give nim'all the juice he can take comfortably. Treat 4 the liver thoroughly?at least three i times in the first 24 hours. At the 4 end of 36 hours you will see a de- 4 cided change in the skin. The yellow ^ cast will be very much lighter, which ! is a sure sign that the patient is get- ? ting better. Watch the urine close- +< ly. The third day there may occur a suppression. If so give strong 4 stimulations to the renal plexus 4 through the abdomen, and be sure J there is a thorough relaxation of the j dorsal and lumbar muscles. ^ "'Relapses are frequent under the ^ old treatment. There is no differ- 4 ence between the symptoms of the 4 relapse and the initial attapk. J "Chronic malaria is very easily j cured by the use of one pound of red ^ rare steak per day in addition to the ^ regular diet. I find very little mala- ? ria in families which eat beef in any way, especially those that eat it rare. J It is an established fact that people ^ in the malarial district eat very little ^1 beef. I find that 95 per cent, of the ^ cases of malaria never eat it, or wnen they on rare occasions do, it has been ^ so over-cooked that all the blood- J building substances have been de- ^ stroyed. The beef raw would be bet- 4 ter in my opinion, although the pos- ^ sible chance of getting tape worm or animal parasite is so considerable ^ that I would advise that the beef J should be heated to 250 degrees F. ^ "I have never used quinine in any 4 way.
