Greenville, Dec. 14.?Irving, the 10-year-old son of the Rev. John W. I Weinber, a struggling country min- t ister and student of Furman Univer- i sity, was run down by an automobile e on Augusta street this afternoon and \ killed. t The combined efforts of the city a police and the county authorities to i ascertain the slayers of the child s have come to naught, as the driver t of the car, when he saw that he had r run over the child, applied more pow- T er to his machine and sped away, t Two men and three women occupied the car. "I wonder if we have kill- c ed him," exclaimed one of the wo- I men passengers as the machine pass- r ed over the boy, but they did not stop g to satisfy her curiosity. She and the v driver of the car were seen to look v back at the bleeding form lying on 1 the street, but that was all the no- f tice taken of the incident by them. a A merchant ran into the street \ and picked the little fellow up and v called for physicians. The lad was a placed in a machine and rushed to the hospital, but died on the way. His J father had gone into the country, j where he was to fill an engagement of r\no r?f hie r>hnrr?h#?s to-morrow. When the lifeless body of the child was carried to the home, where the a mother and three younger children ^ were alone, it was the first news they c had had of the tragic event. The t mother swooned at sight of her dead r boy and at dark was in a critical conditon from the shock. The child's g skull was frightfully broken and torn n by the blow from the automobile. g SENTENCED TO CHAIN GANG. Athens Bankers, Pleading Guilty, ^ Expected to Pay Fine. _ Athens, Ga., Dec. 13.?J. Greenville, Dec. 14.?Luther Melee, a well-to-do farmer of the coun- J y, and Doc Knight, a well-known | )lanter of the same neighborhood, ngaged in a difficulty this afternoon, nth the result that Knight was dealt wo blows in the head with an axe nd mortally wounded. The attendng physician stated that the man's kull was badly crushed and the train lacerated, necessitating the renoval of a large section of bone, ^he wounded man can last but a few tours longer states the physician. From what can be learned of the [ifficulty, it seems that McBee and knight went to a neighbor's house tearby. There they evidently en;aged in a fight, for when Knight . ,-as found he was lying on the ground rith the bloody axe lying beside him. "here was but one witness to the af- . air, a negro woman. The county uthorities state that the two men , vere drinking. Some five or six < ear ago McBee was tried for killing negro, but was acquitted. ' City Marshal Kills Farmer. i Tampa, Fla., Dec. 14.?City Mar- j hal Jack Guthrie shot and killed i 'harles Keene, a well known farmer, 1 t Hawthorne, near here, this afterloon. Guthrie was attempting to erve a warrant on Keene, charging ! he latter with carrying concealed < weapons. Keene resisted and drew lis revolver, emptying its contents ; nto Guthrie's body. Before he fell : he marshal drew his own weapon and i :illed Keene. Guthrie is shot in both irms and in the abdomen. He will < ecover. Slayer of Brad Courtney not Cap- ft tured at Midnight. Aiken, Dec. 12.?Harris Miles, alias "Simp," the negro who killed Brad Courtney, had not been captured at midnight. The posse was still searching for him. lrvin T. Jones, director of the Bank of Wagner, one of the possemen, was shot and dangerously wounded by Chief of Police Howard about 9 o'clock. Jones will probably recover. In a clump of woods just outside of Aiken, Howard was hiding, on the watch for Miles. Seeing a man approaching in a crouching position, Howard drew his pistol and ordered the man to stop. Jones, also mistak ing Howard for the negro fugitive, J and believing the supposed negro was about to shoot him, threw up his rifle and fired. The shot went wild and Howard fired on Jones, the bullet passing through a bank book in Jones's pocket and deflecting into his stomach. Howard assisted in an operation on Jones, in which the bullet was removed. WOMEN EVADE JURY DUTY. "Out of Town" Gag Successfully Worked on Kansas Deputy. Independence, Kan., Dec. 13.?An gvident reluctance among society women to respond to calls for jury service brought an announcement to-day by Justice Clark that he "intended to have a woman jury in every case in his court, where the testimony is Dot likely to be of an embarrassing nature." He said women had more time for jury duty than men. Deputy Sheriff Edward Wadman reported he had found it practically impossible to serve subpoenas on six prominent women summoned as jurors in the case of "Jim" Blue, to be j tried to-morrow charged with "shoot- j ing up" an interurban street car. On i the many cases he said he was met at! the door by a butler or maid with the j information that the mistress was "out of town." while at the same time he could see the '"absentee 111 an up- j stairs window laughing at him. . On his way to his office this morn- I ing Justice Clark saw one of the wo- j men on the street. An hour later he I received a telephone message that she ! was "out of town" and could not W serve.
