J ' c r EMERSON FOUND GUILTY. Jury, However, Includes Recommendation of flercy. Anderson, Jan. 16 ?The jury in the ease of the State vs. Alien Emerson, charged with the murder of T. F. Drake, returned a verdict of guilty of murder with a recommendation to mercy tonight, after S deliberating about one hour. The defendant displayed little, if any, emotion when the verdict was read. Thomas Allen of counsel for the defense gave notice of intention to apply for a new t. r Irial. ' 1 AlL _ ..Emerson, wno was a guara on me county chaingang, killed T. F. Drake in the home of the latter on the night of the 11th of last August. Emerson was ,n the room with one of Drake's daughters, and Drake came in the room on them with his pistol in his hand. He fired one k shot at Emerson, who fired two shots, the ' latter killing Drake instantly. The plea was self-defense. Emerson and the woman had been intimate for several / years, and Drake had forbidden Emerson > to come to the house. Personal Mention. ?Mr. W. D. Sease, of Ehrhardt, was in the city Friday. ?Mr. J. C., January 17.1907. Lo, The Wise Indian. - There has been quite a little said about i . the grafter taking advantage of the Fv Indian. It is not always thus. A land jnao who wanted an Indian's signature to a deed told the Indian, who was sufferI 1 ing with toothache, to go to a dentist and have his teeth fixed, and said that he, the grafter, would pay the expense. The grafter did this to jolly the Indian into signing the deed. The Indian returned * from the dentist's with $238 worth of gold crowns in his head. The laud man paid the bill Whether the Indian sigog ed the deed is njt necessarily a part of P the story. The Old Roman Epicures. Almost any dish which had to recommend it rarity, costliness, indigestlbility and, to our way of thinking. Hastiness was sure to take with the Roman epicure. And if he were unable to made it costly any other way he would add powdered precious stones or gold dust. Nero dined on one occasion from a peacock which was sprinkled with diamond dust, and specimens of that bird dressed with gold or with crushed pearls were by no means a rarity at the triclinia of the moneyed Romans. A dish of parrots' tongues was a great delicacy. But a dish of parrots' tongues which had been capable, when in their proper place, of framing words was of almost incalculable value, which increased in a direct ratio with the vocabularies of the defunct parrots. The tongues of these birds were specially prepared, together with the brains, and took the place which a hors d'oeuvre would now take. The Words on a Clgsr Box. What mean the various words which are stamped on the lid aud sides of a cigar box? These are not mere fancy names/but terms actually descriptive of the cigar. On the lid Is the name of the cigar. The front of the box describes the shape and size, as "conchas," "relna," "regalias," which state the shape, and "perfecto infantes," "princesses," which signify the size. These may be combined, as "conchas i speciales," "conchas flnas," to state both shape and size. At the back of the box, where the lid turns over, is stamped the quality of the cigar?"su* perfina," "fina," "flor," "superior" and "bueno," being the terms In the descending scale. The color of the cigar is declared on the right hand side or end of the box. "Claro" signifies the lightest colored, "Colorado claro" rather dark, "Colorado" dark, "Colorado maduro" darker, "maduro" very dark, "oscuro" extremely dark, "negro" darkest. > Honrs of Sleep. The belief that the hours of sleepshould be artificially restricted is contrary to ordinary good sense. If the human body does not need sleep for the upbuilding of its tissues it will not call for it A rule of health which cannot be wrong is to sleep if possible as long as any inclination for it exists. The erroneous view on this subject is undoubtedly due to the fact that ?wheu the mind and body are thoroughly rested it Is often difficult to arouse the mind from its comfortable lethargy. On the other hand, the man who Is under a mental strain and sleeps only five or six hours at night Is keen and alert soon after awakening. A holiday maker of this type very often goes to a watering place, one of those resorts which it is now the fashion for cultivated people to despise. Such contempt is affectation. A number of happy people create, no doubt, an exhilarating atmosphere. Well behaved pleasure seekers make an agreeable and ever changing picture. A well kept public garden, a good band and a fine view form attractions which no continental affects to despise, and English people do not despise it either if only the brightly dressed crowd should happen to talk in a foreign tongue.?London Spectator. Parchment is the skin of sheep or other animals prepared In sheets to render them fit for being written upon. The heavier parchment, used for drumheads, is made from skins of asses, older calves, wolves and goato. All these are similarly prepared. The skin, being freed from the hair, is placed in a lime pit to cleanse it from fat. The pelt is then stretched upon [ a frame, care being taken that the surface is free frem wrinkles. The flesh Is then pared off with a circular knife. It is then moistened and whiting spread over it The workman then with a large pumice stone rubs the skin. He next goes over It with an Iron instrument and rubs it carefully with pumice stone, without chalk.' The skin is gradually dried, tightening being occasionally required. .
