The k body has adjourned on Friday for the past two weeks. But they charge for the time just the same, j|' hnd the people pay the bills. Senator Carlisle, of Spartanburg, i -. i has introduced a marriage license law 1 , in the Senate, and the judiciary comjj? mittee has recommended its passage. Such a law is needed in this State, and it is to be hoped it will pass both IS& the senate and house. Conductor Blair Killed. . %. : Columbia, . Blair, a conductor on the Columbia, 'X^y Newberry and Laurens road, was shot at 2 o'clock this afternoon at his home on Lanrens street and died an hour afterI-"' . J ?. wards. Just before his death Blair is said to % haye made the statement that his wife ahot him. !Mrs. Blair admits that the pistol was in her hand when the fatal shot was fired, bat she says it was accidental. She says her husband threatened to beat her, and is the scuffle which ensued the pistol was discharged. Before marriage Mrs. Blair was Miss Bthel Wade Barrington, of Greensboro, KT. C. She is very handsome, and has two children, both small. Blair was about 40 fears of age. Irish Crop of Great Lake. The fish stories of the Great Lakes are Sioth big and true. .Practically every rariety of fresh-water fish in common ise as food is found in the Great Lakes. The principal yield is trout, white-fish mdiherring, but there are dozens of ot her rinds that are taken in considerable la&ntities. Even the despised sucker represents a value of $121,576 in the latest eport by the national bureau of fisheries. I Sturgeons were caught to the valae of $89,394, yellow perch amounted to $139,680, pike perch or wall-eyed pike to $71,285, turtles to $2,372. "Prosperity of the People." The country waits until the railroads tod great trusts and corporations make ,fthrir annual reports, showing the immense "net earnings" they have wrenched from the pockets of the people and then there is a tremendous clatter about the "great prosperity of the people." These financial magnates are not "the people," and every dollar of profit that th^y make on watered stock is stolen from the people. The people are pros\ perous, it is true, but they are so in spite fev|' of the way in which they have been v robbed by these land pirates. William Fleming, the traveling photo grapher who was shot at Springfield neai Orangeburg last Tuesday, was brought to Columbia yesterday and is now at the State hospital. Fleming, it appears, was a member of the Order of Eagles at Brooklyn aud that lodge wired the Columbia aerie to see that he was taken care of by the members. Secretary Fox engaged W. Boyd Evaus as counsel to have him removed to Columbia and a hearing will be given as soon as he is able to be out. Fleming became involved in a row with Chief of Police Holloway and Calvin Cooper, both of Springfield. Springfield, January 15.?William Fleming, a photographer, was shot through the thigh and stomach today and fataliy wounded. Chief of Police Holloway is shot through the thigh and Calvin Cooper is seriously wounded in the thigh. During the afternoon Fleming and a friend who had been drinking began tormenting horses of farmers left in a wagon lot. When the cop attempted to arrest the two men, they resisted, drawing guns. Cooper was pressed into service by the officer and immediatly a battle ensued. Fleming took Holloway unawares and fired a ball through his thigh, and turning the pistol on Cooper, wounded him in a serious manner. From statistics published In Washington last Tuesday it is shown that the government is paying the railways three times as much on the average for the transportation of mail matter as the express companies pay to roads for like services. On the basis of the postmaster general's estimates publishing firms assert that the government during the fiscal year ending June, 1907, wiil pay the roads almost $32,000,000 more than the express ' companies would pay them for handling an equal tonnage.
