Our town is daily visited by the jovial drummer soliciting orders for fall trade. Better buy that organ now. They are going fast. T. Black, Bamberg, S. C. Hp The Bamberg Guards are to go to Columbia to-day for their annual encampment. People who are always trying to be somebody else succeed in being nobody at all. Hon. H. C. Folk's handsome brick building on Main street is receiving the finishtouches. Have you seen Thos. Black's pianos? They are "beauts" and have got to go. Fish-fries on the banks of the Edisto are quite frequent just now, and are enjoyed by old an?) young. Many of our citizens enjoy the Sunday excursions to the Isle of Palms for a few breaths of the sea breeze. The Southern Railway calls attention to its rates and service to the World's Fair at St. Louis. See the ad. The town authorities are having the streets worked, and it is promised they will be put in good condition. The candidates are canvassing the country in search of votes and enjoying the good old country hospitality. Policeman Kirkland, who has been sick at his home in the country for several weeks, is out again and on duty. The farmers are laying by their crops, and will take a short rest, after which . Vior- trill lav hv the candidate croD. I Our market is well supplied with watermelons, and the average darkey is happy in the enjoyment of the luscious fruit, pfMr. H. G. Black, Bamberg, S. C. |j? Rev. M. L. Lawson, of this place, is conducting a protracted meeting at Hunteris Chapel, a few miles in the country. ; Notwithstanding the scarcity of money and the busy season with the farmers, our merchants seem to be doing a good business. Local news is scarce this week. The farmers are busy, while the town people are saying nothing, and trying to keep ?* cool. The cotton market seems to be quiet. The farmers would much rather see a flurry in cotton prices than so much flurry in politics. onfi/>inofn Q MTT nlf] (VU1 UVJ o UUV4VApW?tv v? Thirty feet is to be added at the rear end and entirely new shelving will be put in. The Home Missionary Society will meet next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jones Williams. All members are urgently requested to be present. The new artesian well is nearing completion. A strong flow has been struck, and after going some deeper, the piping will be put in, and the work will be finished. The candidates for railroad commissioner will strike Bamberg on Wednes day, the 27th, and tell "the dear people" what they need in the way of railroad facilities. A gentleman who has just returned from a tour through the county, states that the rains have been general through out the county, and the crops are in a, prosperous condition. Qnite a number of our citizens are rusticating in the mountains and at the springs, while we poor stay-at-homes are calming ourselves on artesian water and watftrmelons. ({ Refreshing showers have fallen in several sections of this county during the past week, and crops are looking much better in consequence. However, coru is damaged, and the yield will be cut short. Try Thos.Black for any and all kinds of musical instruments, sewing machines and accessories. T. Black, Bamberg, S. C. The State Press Association is in session at White Stone Springs, and the knights of the quill are having a jolly time, while the printers and devil is at home grinding out news, and making goo-goo eyes at each other, just because the weather is a little warm. A small house occupied by Addison Johnson, a negro, iu the South-western part of town, was burned last Wednesday night about eleven o'clock. It is not known how the fire originated, as there was no one at home at the time. The entire contents of the house were destroyed. The infant child of Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Hoover died last Thursday morning. It was a little girl, and only lived a short " while after its birth. The body was carried to Hampton on Friday for burial. The bereaved parents have the sincere sympathy of their friends in this sad affliction. " A social meeting of the Epworth League was held at the elegant home of Mr. and Mrs. G. Frank Bamberg Tuesday evening. The hours were whiled away in social conversation and music, recitations and reading by the young ladies. The occasion was enjoyed by all who were present. ; , The editor is away, our correspondents seem to be on a strike, there is no local news stirring, our devil has been to the Isle of Palms for his health, which is AHA Trailing frtT* very poor, me pumuio cm ^ J giiiug IVi I copy, and taking everything into consideration, the newspaper business this week is almost what Gen. A petition has been sent to the presiding judge of this circuit asking that no jury cases be tried f 'c the July term of court for this county, but as we go to press no reply to the petition has been received. It is quite likely the request will be granted, as there is only one prisoner in jail, and the criminal docket is unusually light. Doctor Evans, the American dentist, who achieved such success in Paris, once received, before he went abroad, a letter from a young Yermonter, who wanted a set of false teeth made and sent to him. The letter concluded: "My mouth is three inches acrost, five-eighth inches j threw the jaw. Some hummocky on the 1 edge. Shaped like a hoss shew, toe forara. To the Public. I hereby announce to my friends and supporters that I have decided to withdraw from the race for the senate. Good and sufficient reasons of a private nature influence this course. I thank my many friends for the support and encouragement they have given me, and much regret that I will be unable to offer my services to Bamberg county in the next election. H. SPANN DOWLING. We had-been camped for a few days at a point on the upper reaches of the Pic river, waiting for a few of the party who were running a side line. A source of amusement was watching the descent of a large baldheaded eagle in the eddy back of the point. He would strike the water with great force, coming down from an immense height At times he would dive under the surface to reappear a mo- j ment or two later generally witn a : fish clutched in his claws, when he j would fly (freighted with his fish) to a very high mountain, on the overhanging crest of which the nest with his mate and young were quite visible to us with our field glass. I had noticed his success and Journeys to the nest for two mornings. On the third morning a shadow coming across the sun's rays caused me to look up and there was the great bird ; at his usual hunt to supply the young j eagles with breakfast With his keen eye piercing the river depths be poised over a particular spot for a few mo meats and tnen soot aowu wiiu ui? velocity of a cannon ball. The waters parted and tbe eagle was lost to view. I watched and waited to see him emerge with his prey, but momeats lengthened into minutes, and minutes into a quarter of an hour, but the surface of the water remained undisturbed. What could it mean? Even if he had struck himself against some hidden rock and been killed tbe body would have floated to the surface. It passed my reasoning powers to solve the result of that plunge. Then far down, fully a quarter of a mile off, I saw the great bird struggling, either to carry off a heavy burden or to free himself from one. - The waters were lashed into foam and the bird again, disappeared, and all was still. This lashing of the water and disappearing were repeated again and again, each time farther downstream. A bend in the river prevented my seeing the final result. Calling one of our men from the tent, we embarked in a canoe and started down the river to view the strange proceeding closer. When we had doubled the point below I saw lodged against the beach in a small bay something that did not look natural to the place. We paddled down and found it waa my eagle fast fixed to a sturgeon fully six feet long. Both were motionless. The king of fish and the king of birds had met death.?Forest and Stream. A Cold In the Head. A hydropathic treatment of a coil in the head is more reliable than any other. It is as follows: In the morning after rising and at night before retiring wash the feet and legs as high np as the knees in cold water, then rub them with a rough towel and massage them till the skin is red and glowing. In addition to this cautiously sou I tepid water up the nose frequently during the day and sip with a teaspoon a glassful as hot as can be borne an hour before each meal and at bedtime. A few days is often quite sufficient for simple cases and obstinate ones yield if the treatment Is prolonged. No medicines are required. If taken in the first stages of the disease a cold is broken up which might otherwise become a severe case of bronchitis, lasting many days or weeks.?Chicago News. A Svbatltnte For Lotto.
