The People has received the follow ing letter from Mrs. James A. Cath- cart, of Columbia, with the request that it be published. The matter covered therein will prove of interest to the women of the State and the request is cheerfully complied with. Mrs. Cat heart writes as^llows: To The Editor of The Barnwell People: That the women of the State want a dormitory at the University of South Carolina has been proven be yond a doubt. The State-wide move ment for such a building has been heartily endorsed by the South Caro- »>na. Federal uni .of V the South Carolina Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, the South Carolina Division of the D. A. R., the South Carolina Di vision of tmV^J. D. C., the State lyoague for Womhns^’oters, the South Carolina Woman’s CJiristian Tem perance Union, the Dillon • County Federation of Woman’s Clubs, and hundreds of other clubs and individu als throughout the State. Graduates of every woman’s college in the State both ex-suffragists and ex-anti’s, are enthusiastically backing this move ment. As you know, co-education has been in existence at the Univer sity of South Carolina, by Act of the Legislature, since 1S94, and in the en tire twenty-six years the State has made no appropriation for a dormi tory for women at the University. Notwithstanding this condition, the attendance of young women ,at the tlniversity has increased 200 per cent in the last few years. Hundreds of other young women leave the State every year to obtain University training and degrees, • because their own University has made no provis ion for them. The State hos splen didly equipped three institutions for men—the University of South Caro lina, Clemson, and The Citadel. Why are the women of the State discrimi nated against? A lot, easily worth $75,000.00 op posite the University Infirmary, and entirely apart from the men’s dor mitories, has been designated as a suitable .site by the Board of Trus tees of the University for thb" build ing. A bill for this appropriation will be introduced at this session of the Leg islature. This matter has never been forcibly brought to the attention of our Legislators before. Now that they realize the necessity for a dor mitory for women at the University of South Carolina, what will they do about it? Mrs. James A.
