Our Christmas Wish. CHILDREN OF 1920. By Sophie R. Drew. To the Readers of The People: It does not require the occasion of Christmas, with its joys, cheer and prevalent wood will, to arouse in us a sense of the .appreciation due patrons of The Barnwell People. Our hearts and minds are filled with gratitude and pood thouphts for you every day of the year, but Christ inas hallows our sentiments and makes expression fitting and timely. They tell me Santa Claus is coming, Just the same, as in the past, Will he bring a lot of jimcracks? This is what I came to ask. Now, I don’t want his silly toys, Nor horrid things that make a « noise; " I do not care for cakes or candy, And all that kind of stuff. To hand out things like these to kids Is surely rather tough. 1 want the very latest airship All done up in brightest blue. I want to take a peep at Mars With a handsome man like you. If in any sense we have upheld a beacon to light the way to better things, you have supplied oil for the lamp. If ours has been a chariot, yours has been the motive element which has kept in on its way. All characters appealing to or en deavoring to entertain or instruct the public must be given a. certain amount of applause, or they cannot exist. To those who follow- the Fourth Estate the applause comes in the interest which readers manifest in the columns of the paper and an occasional “Well done” when the ef- fyrta of the publisher meet with the approval of the readers. The prac tical help of subscription and adver tisers has enabled The People to maintain a standard of publication; their encouragement, manifested on more than one occasion, has fur nished the degree of pleasure ncces- ^laryias an incentive to our daily |^at this time of “Peace on will towards men,” our jthat the Spirit of Christmas ly wolrk for you the full degree of boihrtffulness. Warren AUTHORIZED FORD SALES AND SERVICE. Barnwell, South Carolina. •m i The announcement that the various departments of the State government would request the General Assembly for an appropriation of nearly $10,- 000,000, for 1921 has aroused a storm of protest throughout the State. In line with the opinion expressed in last week’s issue of The People is j i the following editorial from The Y Bamberg Herald: ^ The state goverment is asking the next legislature for approximate ly $10,000,000, a svmj of money not even heard of before for state govern mental purposes. Tnis is an .increase of some three millions or more over last year, when more than six mill ions were appropriat’d. We don’t believe the legislature will listen to it for a moment. The People who pay the bills in South Carolina are expecting the legislature to materi ally reduce taxes instead of increas ing them. The purchasing power of a dollar will be anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent, more next year than it was in 1920. and yet they are wanting a fifty ped cent, increase in the ap propriations. The state, like every body else, has enjoyed a tremendous' orgy of spending , hut times have changed, and so has the value of money, and appropriations will cer tainly have to change with them. A ten million dollar appropriation will not be accepted by the people of this state and the goverment mental* heads may as well revise dtnv award. s I WANTED Pine Timber ' ' In Round Logs F. O. B.
