DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS NOW EXIST IN NEAR EAST Henry Morganthau Makes ^Earnest Plea to the American People. Columbia, Dec. 20.—E. 0. Black, treasurer of the Near East Relief has received a telegram from Henry Mongfenthau, fornier ambassador to Turkey, telling- of the deplorable con ditions now existing in the Near East and making an earnest plea to the people of the United States not to -abandon the little orphans who are now being taken care of by the peo ple of this country. “America won the admiration and cratitude of the Near East by disin terested altruism and philanthrophy during the past four years. Peace and order have not been restored. These people are still helpless. Their land has again been the battleground of contending forces. ‘ 'Hteir efforts to maintain independence have par tially failed owing to the superior force of their neighbors. “Large numbers of refugees have again been disposseasod of their tem porary homes. Recent cables state that Uw- roads leading to the various places of safety are crowded with ref ugees. A hard winter has begun. The snow is knee deep in many places. These helpless refugees are again thrown on our me*ry. Unless we ATTRACTIVE MEETING OF BLACKVILLE BOOK CLUB Mrs. L. C. Still Entertained Members Wednesday Afternoon. The People has received the follow ing communication from Col. R. M. Mixson, of Williston, president <pf the Barnwell County Branch of the American Cotton Association: « “To the Bankers, Merchants, Business Men and ^.f'armers of Barnwell County :- “At our annual meeting last sales- - day, I took occasion to say that I saw a rift in the dark clouds of despress- ion covering our economic horizon. Things w*ere being done, strenuous . i efforts were being put forth by tho American Cotton Association to clear the horizon and bring aunshine to all interested in agriculture genenally and cotton particularly. • I am de lighted to be able to now announce that we have succeeded. The. dark, threatening clouds have been* rifted, we can now see the sunshine, the economic clouds will soon be driven away. The American Products Ex* port and Import Corporation has been organized, the Export Financing Corporation has been organized, but, best of all, for our immediate help the Senate and Congress have re established the War Finance Corpo ration, which brings into immediate use $370,000,000 witn which to fi nance exports of agricultural products to Europe, and an import tax has been put on agricultural products, includ ing cotton ami cotton seed. These * give us the relief for which we have been fighting for twelve months. “Now, it is up to us to complete the job by a drastic reduction in our cotWtfLAcreage next year. Let us be that which is necessary for our protection-let us reduce our cotton acreage fifty per cent, amt throw ourselves behind the Export and Imports Products Corporation. Let us complete the organization of our Association, until every man and woman in our country are members. Now is the time to throw our full force and influence behind our As sociation; if w*e do, success is assured* “There will be a meeting of our county association January 3rd. which is salesday. Let everybody come; we want to discuss acreage reduction an<? all matters pertaining to farming. Let’s get together and make our organization a real live one, handling labor, and all other matters in which we are vitally interested. Let’s get ready to give -a mighty shout over the magnificent victory; already won and prepare to per- petuate it for the future. “R. M. Mixson, President” <\ Blackville, S. C. Dec. 20. 1920.
