Thfe Bamwell Pebple. Entered at the poet office at Barnwell, S. C., aa second-class nutter. T john w. holm as 1840-1912 B. P. DIVIK8, Setter and Praprietor THURSDAY AUGUST 6, 1914. Keeping the Record Straight. For the past several years the press of South Carolina has come in for more than its share of abuse at the hands of politicians, who have used this means to boost themselves into office. “News paper lie” has been a favorite charac terization with them and the news papers have not thought it worth their while to defend themselves or to show “by the preponderance of the evidence” that they had not lied. As p result, the press has lost much of its influence with a certain class of readers. It was from a realization of these facts that the editor of The People, ris ing to a question of personal privilege, appeared on the stand at Barnwell Thursday and read affidavits to substan tiate the truth of a newspaper report written by him as correspondent for The State and The News and Courier. There was nothing personal in it, but our veracity-of a newspaper reported had been questioned and we merely sought to retain the respect of the people our own self-respect by proving the statement to be true. We believe that we have succeeded in doing this and we have no apologies to make. So * • • • far as we are concerned, we consider the incident closed. “We have them beat by a majority of form 8,000 to 13,000.”—From a Report of one of the governor’s speeches. It is to snigger! Less than three weeks before the first battle of the ballots. “And there will be wars and rumors of wars.” Notice of Municipal Ejection.
