FEBUARY 19, 1914. ^ ' . • ' . ' 7 * \ IPUI.IIM.L. . J! L! mm r JL ,. .. 1 !-■ Is it Worth the Pries? According to a report issued by the Aiken County Dispensary Board, cov ering a period of five years and three month*, theaales in the county during that time amounted 'to 91,510,772.85. ^ About One-fourth of this amount, 9394,- 334.42, represents the net earnings. The report did not state how much waf -paid for the whiskey and beer-soM, but a conservation estimate would be s 50 per cent of the total sales, which would amount to more than three-quarters of a million dollars sent away from the state and county into the coffers of the dis tilleries and breweries! Think of what might have been ac complished in an industrial, educational or commercial way with that amount of money! Think of the number of com fortable homes that sum could have built! Think of the many new enter prises that money would have financed, giving employment to hundreds of people! Think of how much good that amount would have done in educating the boys and girls of Aiken County Andso on and so on. •- On the other hand, think of the amount of anguish that the whiskey ^ .bought with that money has caused! Think of the aching hearts of the moth ers and wives and sisters and sweet hearts of Aiken County! Think of the homes it has wrecked, of the firesides that have been desolated because of a whiskey-erased brain! Think of the wretched bouses that might have been made fairly comfortable if the money of their occupants had not gone into the It is worth the price? The People hopes that the experi ment in tobacco culture to bh tried this year by those progressive Meyer’s Mill farmers will prove so successful that others wiU give this branch of agricul ture a trial next year. Tobacco is one of the great money crops of this coun try, and has been successfully raised in the Eastern, or Pee Dee, section of South Carolina. It is only within the past few years that the farmers of this State have come to realize the possi bilities of successful tobacco farms, and the “habit” of growing the weeding is spreading almost as fast as that of smoking it It is being tried out in Colleton now and if it meets with the success expected the farmers of that county will plant extensively. Many Pee Dee farmers have been enabled to remove the mortgages from their farms by growing tobacco and are now well on the road to financial inde pendence and freedom from servitude to king cotton. The tobacco is jrAar-' keted at what ; s now an “off’ season with this section and would bring in -many thousands of dollars in ready money at a time when it is badly need ed., Watch the experiment, brother farmer, and next year fall ip line. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things’of others”—St Paul. “No of us liveth to himself, and none diethto himself”—The same. None man can be tibe to himself and untrue to his neighbor. Yet the phi losophy of Shakespeare is faulty. Man’s ego is the unity of his (>erson- ality—the sum of ail his endowments and faculties. '' Without due regard to the highest endowments and faculties of the soul no man can be true to himself. But the ego—the individual personali ty—is not a thing apart. It is set in relationships to other personalities, human and divine. These relation ships involve corresponding obliga tions, in view of which egotism (thought of and regard for self at the one life- motive) must yield to altruism (regard for the other man). The good of all is the good of each. Man has a duty to himself, a duty to his neighbor, and a duty to God. No man can, in the fullest sense, be true to himself unless he fulfils his duty or obligation to God and his fel low-man. Egotism and altruism re spectively represent the viewpoints of the individualist and of the lover of the common weal.
